Edo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Paul Ohonbamu, has resigned his membership of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s executive council.

He announced his resignation in a terse letter he signed and addressed to Governor Obaseki.

He was immediately replaced by Mr. Stewart Efe.

Ohonbamu in his resignation letter, said his resignation took effect from today.

“Without setting a precedent, I have decided to step aside as cabinet member and operate outside‎ it for the general good of Edo State and pursuit of happiness for the citizens,”

He wrote.

He however expressed gratitude to the Governor‎ for in‎dulging him in his “purposeful and sophisticated administration”.

“I greet you, Sir, and the ever loyal members of the state executive council. I am particularly delighted that his Excellency’s second term bid is firm and sure-footed.

“Whenever we shall meet again I know not. Therefore, our everlasting farewell take. If we do meet, why, what shall smile, if not, it is true this parting was well-meaning,”

He said.

When contacted, Ohonbamu, a lawyer, confirmed his resignation but declined to make further comments.

In a statement announcing the appointment of the new Commissioner, the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., said:

“Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has approved the appointment of Mr. Stewart Efe as Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation.

Ogie added that the appointment takes “immediate effect.”

Until his appointment, Stewart Efe was the Public Relations Officer of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uselu, Benin City.

Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng has called for schools to include “integral” anti-racism lessons as part of their curriculums as he feels that “no child in this world is born a racist”.

The centre-back’s comments come in the wake of ongoing unrest in the US, with the majority of major cities across the country seeing protesters take to the streets following the death of African-American citizen George Floyd.

Racism is prevalent in the football world too, with countless incidents having taken place over the years and prompting the establishment of organisations such as Kick It Out and various other initiatives aimed at eradicating discrimination in the sport.

Boateng, however, feels that is not enough, and that children should be taught from a young age that harbouring hatred for people based on the colour of their skin is down to a lack of education.

“Everything begins with the education of children,” the Germany international told DW.

“That’s the most important thing. No child in this world is born a racist. It’s up to the parents and what they tell their children.

“The worst thing that could happen would be for my children to experience such things. It’s vital that we teach them that racism isn’t acceptable and that, should they see someone being abused, they should defend them and speak up.

“That has to start in school. It has to be an integral part of the curriculum. Only in that way can we make progress.”

Asked to comment on various pieces of footage being circulated from the mass protests in the US, Boateng said:

“The images shock me. Some of the things on social media at the moment are brutal. And unfortunately, the protests are also taking on a difficult form.

“Nevertheless, the case of George Floyd shows us just how widespread racism against black people is in America, and the role racial profiling plays. I find it extremely upsetting because I’m often in America myself and I like the country and the culture a lot.

“But it’s nothing new; it’s something which is omnipresent. Racism is found everywhere, but it is extreme in the USA.

“I read a good quote recently: It’s as if racism is a dark room and, every now and then, someone turns the light on and everything is revealed.

“When you think how much Afro-Americans have done for the image and culture of the United States, I find it inexplicable. And I’m only thinking of sport, fashion and music. Barack Obama as President was also a defining figure.”

Residents of Jalingo, Taraba State, spent an hour struggling to stop a military man from committing suicide.

According to the report, the soldier identified simply as Ali, climbed the Welcome to Taraba Roadblock Tower -over 24fts high, threatening to jump down.

The Nation reports that, the said soldier was speaking in Hausa and pidgin, saying: “I want to die. Allow me to jump down and die.” But the youth who have gathered there, spent quite some time begging him: “Please do not jump. We don’t want you to die.”

It was also gathered that the soldier’s behaviour attracted their attention when they spotted him on top of the tower pulling and throwing down the items of clothing on him.

“We noticed someone climbing the place and pulling off his clothes. We got there to discover he is someone we know. He was left with under pant and an inner vest and poised to jump. We went close and began to beg him,” an eyewitness was quoted by the newspaper as saying.

A close look reveals he has an injury on his left kneecap, which he bandaged.

A source told The Nation that Ali has mental illness and has been relieved of his job, of recent.

“He is an ex-soldier, fond of riding military motorbikes in town. He was sacked from the army when it was discovered he is mentally ill,” another source said.

National Association of Osun State Students, the umbrella body for tertiary institution students from the state has demanded death as punishment for any proven case of rape in the state.

Addressing newsmen in Osogbo on Thursday, the president of the group, Ayowale Salahudeen, said stricter sanction for rape must be adopted to serve as a deterrent.

Salahudeen said the group had commenced state-wide campaign tagged ‘SayingNoToRape’ as a result of increasing reports of rape across the country.

“The union wishes to strongly recommend to the government to announce capital punishment as the wage for rape. This will serve as a deterrent and a serve-it-well yardstick for the perpetrators who are undoubtedly nothing but animals.

“As Osun State Students, it is vital that our schools and home be safe spaces for us to learn and love without fear of harassment or abuse of our fundamental human rights,” NAOSS President said.

Meanwhile, Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Mr. Timothy Owoeye, has expressed concern over the increasing rate of rape in the country.

Mr. Owoeye, in a statement signed by his press secretary, Kunle Alabi in Osogbo on Thursday said anyone found guilty of rape by a court in Osun State would be liable to life imprisonment.

The statement said Owoeye while speaking during the plenary lamented the growing trend of rape cases in Nigeria.

“Osun is blessed to have enacted a law that imposes stiffer sentences on perpetrators of rape. Section 358 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. 11, Laws of Osun State, 2002 prescribes a life sentence on anyone found guilty of committing rape while an attempt to commit rape attracts imprisonment of fourteen years.

“I have taken my time to study the anti-rape laws across the country, I have also met with several groups who are at the forefront of the campaign against rape while praying to God to repose the soul of victims of rape, I stand with those who are alive and hope that the victims get justice.

“I am well aware of the two recent cases in our state, the one involving a traditional ruler who allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl and a 27-year-old man who was arraigned for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl.

“I want to charge our law enforcement agencies to diligently prosecute cases of rape. With too many instances, we must begin to hold people accountable no matter how highly placed,” Owoeye said.

Concerned neighbours confronted a man after he beat a 10-month-old baby and the child’s mother because the baby won’t stop crying and depriving him of sleep.

Neighbours accosted the man after he battered the woman and threw her into a pool of dirty water. When asked, he said the woman insulted him after he beat her child for crying.

The man, named Isaac, is a relative of the woman’s baby daddy. He said the baby daddy abandoned the woman and the child in the village so, he brought her down to Lagos in a bid to help her.

She started living with him and he said that’s when he began losing sleep because the child always woke up crying at night.

He explained that he cautioned her to control her child and try breastfeeding him if he tries to keep the child from disturbing his sleep. However, he claimed that, rather than breastfeed the child when he cries at night, the mother will beat him, making him cry more.

He added that as an okada man he needs his sleep but hardly gets it.

On the morning that he beat the child and the mother, he said he heard the child crying and called the woman but she didn’t answer. He beat the 10-month-old child and when his mother, who was in the bathroom, came out, she confronted him for beating her son.

Angered by the disrespect, Isaac said he beat the woman too and pushed her into the dirty water.

The woman had blood running down her hands from the injury inflicted on her. Her clothes were also soiled with the dirty water she was pushed into.

The man explained that he’s been the one taking care of the woman and her child, however, the woman doesn’t listen to him.

When asked what happened, the woman seemed reluctant to speak at first, but she later opened up and explained how the assault happened.

Busola Dakolo has revealed that the Minister of Justice has been handed the investigation carried out by the police on her rape allegation against Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo.

She, however, expressed worries at the loud silence displayed by the Ministry over the case,

”It is now officially one year after since I came out and told the most important story of my life up until this point. That when I was a teenager, Biodun Fatoyinbo violently raped me. It wasn’t just me. In the media, on social platforms and in private, women have been sharing stories of how this man either destroyed their lives or tried to.

“A lot has happened in that time: and my heart is glad that consciousness continues to be raised about the great evil that sexual abuse is, and how widespread it is, and how much women are at risk, and why we need to ensure justice for those who find the strength to speak out.

“Awareness is victory. But we are pushing to another even great victory: Justice.

“When the courts last year decided to rule in favour of the man who assaulted me, people were crestfallen. I understood. What they didn’t know however is that before we even began, we had been prepared for a long haul battle that may take years because the Nigerian legal system isn’t wired to help sexual abuse victims get justice.

“Today, I have a major update. The police have concluded its investigation. And handed over its report to the Ministry of Justice in Abuja for onward prosecution of Biodun Fatoyinbo. He clearly has a case to answer.

But there has been silence from the ministry. Silence. A loud silence!

“We have written a letter but for over a month we have no response.

“Instead, my lawyers and my family have heard about all manner of manipulation and foul play being attempted to stop the ministry from beginning prosecution immediately or even to get the police report manipulated.

“My name is Busola Dakolo, a survivor of one of the most horrific acts -rape. My voice will not be shut down. My case will not be silenced. I am thankful to those in and out of the police, the ministry and the corridors of power who have called in solidarity and to reassure me that they are monitoring the ministry of justice and that this pressure to bury the case will not succeed.

“I am updating the Nigerian public because you all made my story matter. You joined me to say enough is enough. With you, this has been an easier process.”

Katsina state government has reopened its 15 major weekly markets hitherto closed down because of the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic and directed civil servants to return to work.

The major markets are those of Charanchi, Maiadua, Mashi, Dandume, Zango, Danja, Bakori, Yankara, Kafur, Dankama, Kaita, Kagadama, Dutsi, Garkin-Daura and Kayawa.

Daily Trust reports that these markets are major hub for local and international businesses for food and livestock.

The secretary to the state government, Mustapha Inuwa, in a statement on Thursday said the markets are free to reopen from Friday June 5, urging people to adhere to safety measures saying reopening does not mean that the state is free of COVID 19.

In a related development, the government has approved for the resumption of duty of all workers of the state and local government councils on normal basis from Monday, the 8th of this month.

A circular signed by the Permanent Secretary, Administration, office of Head of Civil Service, Katsina state, Lawal Ado Dutsinma explained that the approval followed the lifting of all forms of ban and restrictions under lockdown in the state.

The circular mandated permanent secretaries and chief executive officers of ministries, departments and agencies to ensure compliance to guidelines and protocols for the resumption of work by the workers.

According to the circular, such guidelines and protocols include provision of hand washing facilities in their respective ministries, departments and agencies.

It said that the workers should be mandated to wear face masks at their duty posts and they must observe social and physical distancing in their offices.

A teenage girl has been apprehended for faking her own kidnap alongside her boyfriend in Ogun State.

The 17-year-old identified as Seun Adekunle, was arrested alongside her 25-year-old boyfriend, Basit Olasunkanmi, after her other, Bukky Adekunle, alerted the police on the 4th of June 2020 that she sent her daughter to Lafenwa market since on the 1st of June 2020 and has not returned since then.

She stated further that she received a mysterious call two days later who claimed to have abducted the girl and demanding for the sum of N500,000 as ransom.

Mrs Adekunle said the caller warned her not to make the mistake of involving the police if she still needs her daughter alive.

However, a technical and intelligence based investigation led the police to the hideout where the girl and her boyfriend were hiding and pretending to be with kidnappers.
