The wife of former Lesotho Prime Minister Thomas Thabane, who was charged with the murder of her husband’s first wife, returned to prison on Wednesday after the court annulled her judicial review.

Maesaiah Thabane, 43, was charged back in February for her involvement in the 2017 murder of Lipolelo Thabane, the first wife of Thomas Thabane. She spent one night in jail before a High Court freed her on a 1,000 maloti ($57) bail.

Lipolelo was shot by gunmen shortly before her estranged husband’s inauguration as the Prime Minister and weeks before he married Maesaiah in 2017.

The former couple were separated and had been pursuing a divorce before her death.

Last week Friday, the Lesotho Court of Appeal overturned the controversial judicial supervision measures she had enjoyed after she was granted bail in the case.

After the ruling, the police could not immediately arrest her because she was in South Africa with her husband who had travelled to the neighboring country for treatment.

On Wednesday she arrived at the magistrate court in Maseru under the escort of armed police officers.

Judge Thamae Thamae told her she will remain in prison and will be reconvened on 16 June 2020.

“The decision of the High Court to grant you bail has been set aside by the Court of Appeal,” said the magistrate.

“You will remain in the correctional facility. You will report back on 16 June 2020 to find out the progress of your case.”

After her appearance in court, Police officers immediately whisked her away.

The murder of Lipolelo Thabane, also led to the resignation of 80-year-old Thomas Thabane on 19 May over his alleged involvement in her death.

Back in Febuary, authorities also wanted to charge him but he asked the Constitutional Court to stop the courts from trying him for the crime while he remained in office.

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a warning to its citizens against visiting its consulate office at Walter Carrington Crescent in Victoria Island, Lagos, over a planned protest on the killing of George Floyd, the unarmed black man who was killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis last week.

The planned protest was supposed to happen today June 3rd.

The warning comes after some Nigerians stormed the US embassy in Abuja on Tuesday, to protest against the murder of George Floyd, and also called for an end to racial discrimination and injustice.

In an alert published on its website, the US embassy advised its citizens to be aware of their surroundings and avoid areas surrounding the US consulate office building.

“The U.S. Consulate General in Lagos has received reports that demonstrators plan to gather in front of the Consulate on Wednesday, June 03, 2020 to protest current events in the United States,” the alert read.

“Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence.

“Avoid the areas of Walter Carrington Crescent, the U.S. Consulate General office building, and surrounding areas. Avoid demonstrations and large crowds.

“Be aware of your surroundings. Monitor local media for updates. Carry proper identification, including a U.S. passport with a current Nigerian visa. Review your personal security plans. Wear a mask when in public spaces to protect yourself and others from the spread of the COVID-19 virus.”

Nigeria head coach, Gernot Rohr, has disclosed that he never asked Bournemouth midfielder, Philip Billing, to play for Super Eagles.

According to Rohr, it was Billing’s agent, who called him and said his client was interested in playing for Nigeria because he doesn’t play as much for Denmark.

Speaking in an interview with ESPN, the German tactician, who recently signed a two-and-half-year deal with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), said Billing, 23, told him he wanted some time after he asked the player few questions about the Nigerian team.

Rohr said:-

“Billing’s agent called me and said he was interested in coming to Nigeria because he doesn’t play as much for Denmark.

“So he wanted me to call Billing. I said I didn’t have his number, so he gave it to me. When I called, Billing asked some questions about the Nigerian team.

“And he said, ‘I’m very, very interested in working with you, but give me some time’.

“I think the agent used the interest to make him more important or give him more a chance to play for Denmark.”

Meanwhile, in 2019, Billing revealed that Rohr asked Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi to convince him to play for Nigeria.

Confirming the sad incident, her sister, Mariadora said Tessy was survived by two sisters, a brother, parents, grandmother, aunties, uncles and several relatives, among who is popular singer and Owoyato crooner, Imelda J (elder sister).

“The family is in mourning and requests for privacy at this difficult time.

“We cannot make sense of this tragedy but we believe she is in a better place now.”

Meanwhile, her remains were laid to rest on Tuesday in her hometown at Ojigo, Edumoga Ehaje, Okpokwu Local Government, Benue State.

The Niger state Infrastructure Committee has paid an inpesction visit to Rafi LG where Tungan Bako road is currently being constructed by the Governor Sani Bello led administration.

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 25 year-old-man, Wasiu Bankole, for allegedly raping a 70-year-old grandmother.

The suspect was arrested following a report by the victim at Agbado police division that while she was sleeping in her house on June 2, at Abule lemode area of ijoko at about 8 pm, the suspect suddenly broke into her room; held her down and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her against her consent.

The Ogun State Public Relations Officer (PPRO) , Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the victim stated further that it was one of her neighbours who heard the screaming that came to rescue her by using a stick to hit the suspect on his back consequence upon which he jumped off her and ran away leaving his clothes, shoes and torchlight inside her room.

The detectives succeeded in getting him arrested 24 hours after. On interrogation, he confessed committing the crime but claimed to have acted under the influence of alcohol.

Police Command in Ebonyi have confirmed abduction of two Chinese expatriates working in a mining site in Ihietutu, Ishiagu in Ivo local government area of Ebonyi by unknown gunmen.

The abducted Chinese nationals are employees at Greenfield Metals Nigeria Limited which specialises in lead and zinc mining.

Mrs Loveth Odah, the Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) confirmed the abduction in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) on Thursday in Abakaliki.

She said that the victims were allegedly abducted on Wednesday, June 3 at the mining site.

She, however, explained that the police were yet to establish the motive behind the abduction, adding that preliminary investigation had commenced.

She said:

“We got the information yesterday [Wednesday], a detachment of our tactical team was despatched to the area with a view to unraveling the true situation and also to rescue the victims.

“The team is yet to return to furnish us with relevant information about the incident.

“But, I can confirm to you that we received a distress call from the area yesterday informing the police of an alleged abduction of two Chinese working in a mining site at Ihietutu in Ishiagu community.

“We are waiting for information from our men before we can make informed comments on the motive behind the alleged abduction.

“For now, we cannot say if the abduction was for ransom purposes or not because the abductors are yet to establish contacts with the company.”

She, however, urged non Nigerian nationals working in any part of the state to ensure that they move about with armed security guards to prevent attacks and molestations from criminals and possible kidnapping or abduction.

Mr Henry Ahanaotu, the Chairman and Managing Director, Greenfield Metals, told NAN that the hoodlums abducted their victims at a mining pit at ‘Ajirija’ mining site 300 meters from the company’s Life-Camp after shooting severally into the air to deter any resistance.

He said that a formal report on the incident had been lodged at the police command in the state, adding that the abductors were yet to establish contact with the company.

“The unidentified persons bearing sophisticated arms stormed our mining pit at Ajirija and shot severally before whisking their victims away.

“We are yet to establish the identity of the abductors or where they came from.

NAN recalls that kidnappers in March invaded the company’s Life-Camp at ‘Ugwuajirija’ and kidnapped two Chinese nationals, who later regained their freedom after an undisclosed amount of money was paid as ransom.

Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State on Thursday confirmed that four persons have so far died of Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the state.

The governor made the disclosure in Lafia at the review meeting of the state’s COVID-19 committee.

According to the governor, the state, unfortunately, recorded four deaths including the member of the state assembly representing Nasarawa-West out of the 90 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state.

The governor also said that 705 samples were taken from the state to the Nigeria Centre of Disease Control (NCDC) for testing since the pandemic started.

“Out of the 705 samples taken, we have so far received 658 results and 90 were confirmed positive, while results of the remaining are still being awaited.

“Those receiving treatment at the various isolation centres in the state are so far responding to treatment,” Sule added.

The governor assured the people of the state that the government under his leadership would always prioritize their welfare, health and security in line with the oath of office.

He also expressed gratitude to traditional rulers, security, health personnel, journalists and other stakeholders for their efforts toward containing the virus.

Sule also thanked God for sparing the life of Joseph Masin, Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the state who recently regained his freedom from kidnapers.

He expressed gratitude to the security agencies for their efforts and his family and indeed the entire Christians in the state for their patient during the abduction of the CAN Chairman.

The Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Gombe, on Thursday, said it destroyed 681 bags of adulterated fertiliser in the state.

Mr Ibrahim Shazali, the new Northeast Zonal Head of the commission, told newsmen in Gombe that the exercise was in compliance with a court order.

Shazali said fertiliser adulteration was an act of economic sabotage, which hampered the efforts of the federal government toward ensuring food security in the country.

He stated that such acts if allowed to continue would affect incomes of peasant farmers who might unknowingly buy the adulterated fertilisers and end up not getting the desired result during harvest.

“The worst of it is that some bags of the adulterated fertilisers have inscriptions of presidential fertiliser initiative to make people think the fertiliser is from the federal government.

“They (convicts) print the bags, bring small part of fertiliser and bring in some limestone gotten from Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State, creating an impression that this is coming from the federal government.

“This is exactly where the sabotage comes from. So, even if the fertilisers have federal government tag on them, there is need for farmers to make proper enquiries to ascertain their source,”

The EFCC zonal boss said.

He warned those adulterating fertiliser, saying the commission would apprehend anyone involved as surveillance had been strengthened to ensure they were put out of business, adding, “we are still extending our investigations to Kano and Katsina states.”

While calling for more information from the public, he cautioned farmers to always engage relevant agencies like Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) before buying fertilisers from the markets.

The aggrieved former APC members had last week in a statement announced their defection plan and made good that decision Thursday at a brief ceremony at the PDP state secretariat in Ilorin, the state capital.

Those that were physically present at the event were representatives picked across the five local government areas in Kwara north, in adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols.

The leader of the group, Hon. Manzuma Kawu Dogo, claimed that “we are about 10, 000 in number across the 58 wards in the district “.

Dogo said that they decided to leave the ruling APC because of conflict and crisis among party leaders and members, allegedly caused by non-adherence to the party’s constitution.

Pointing out the political crisis among APC members, Dogo added that the development did not allow growth but decline.

”After waiting for a year, we discovered that the truth has prevailed, necessitating our movement as against compromising our principle. It is high time for us to maintain our clear noble principle towards bringing positive changes and betterment to our people. As you can see there is nothing in the PDP to share now to anyone, therefore our decamping from APC to PDP is based on conviction, ” Dogo clarified.

Welcoming the decampees, the PDP state chairman, Hon.Kola Shittu, described the development as unprecedented, assuring the new members that they will enjoy same rights the existing party members enjoy without discrimination.

“We’re not surprised with the development due to unfulfilled promises of the present administration in the state. Doors of our party are wide open just as our umbrella is big enough to house every citizen of the state”, he said, adding that the PDP is determined to better their future.

Corroborating the decampees claim of non performance by the APC- led government in the state, Shittu said “if our party had won the last gubernatorial election in the state, by now workers in the state would have started enjoying the N30,000 new minimum wage in fulfilment of our agreement with the organised labour in the state. “

“We should take our future in our hands. I’ve directed party leaders across the state to open new register and issue memberships cads to new members so that registration at ward levels is done to ensure that nobody is left behind”, he said.

University students under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Thursday trooped onto the streets of Benin, to demand justice for Uwaila Vera Omozuwa.

Omozuwa a 100 level undergraduate of the University of Benin, was recently raped and murdered.

She was gang-raped inside a church. Then the assailants hit her with a fire extinguisher and left her to die.

The demonstrating students also demanded that a law prescribing death sentence for rapists and sex offenders be enacted

The lawmaker representing Ovia Federal Constituency, Dennis Idahosa, also joined the students in the solidarity march.

He vowed that he would move a motion to support capital punishment at the floor of the house.

Philip Shaibu, the Edo State Deputy Governor, on Thursday revealed why Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, insisted on Direct Primary Election in picking the party’s governorship candidate.

Shaibu alleged that Oshiomhole insisted on a direct primary in Edo State because he has already written the result.

In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Benjamin Atu, the Deputy governor claimed that the APC National Chairman was trying to usurp the powers of the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.

The APC National Chairman is insisting on Direct Primary Election because the result of the yet to be conducted election is already written by him, just waiting to be announced.

He said:

“The State is sovereign but not enjoying its sovereignty because some few people are determined to ruin the State by hand twisting the government and Governor as a stooge.

“What the APC National Chairman is doing is trying to usurp the powers of the State Governor by thinking and making decisions for the Government of Edo State.

“John Oyegun was the former Governor of Edo State and he didn’t usurp Oshiomhole’s power in the name of an ex-Governor. Oshiomhole is not the first ex-Governor in Nigeria.

“He should give the people and the government of Edo State peace to enable them reason collectively together.

“Obaseki is currently the Governor of Edo State and his office must be respected because we can only have one governor at a time.

“He has spoken and there is no going back on the indirect primary. Direct Primary will heighten COVID-19 transmission and infection at the community stage and the State is not ready for such an emergency.”
