Nigerian sprinter Divine Oduduru a.k.a ‘Mr. I never expered it’, who was a gold medalist in both the 100m and 200m events at the 2013 African Youth Athletics championships, has been named athlete of the week by the Big 12 Conference over his performance at the Texas Tech Open where he broke records and shone brightly.

Oduduru who cleared out his previous 20.49 seconds school record with a new world-leading 20.18 mark which also ranks as third NCAA all-time record, broke the university’s 20-year old school record in the 200m indoors meet on Saturday.

With a new record of 6.64 seconds to top his previous time of 6.66 at the Texas Tech Open 60m dash, Divine helped the Texas Tech men’s track & field program reach second-place in the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association indoor rankings.

Oduduru clocked three top-two all-time Texas Tech marks, two of which were school records. In the 60-meter preliminaries, Oduduru topped his previous No. 2 ranked 6.66 time with a new mark of 6.64. He then went on to claim the new school record title with a 6.58 final mark, also serving as the third-ranked 60m time in the nation.

The next day, Oduduru ran only the second indoor 200-meter dash of his life, the first of which broke a 20-year old school record. This blazing-fast 20.18 run pushed down his previous time of 20.49 and secured the No. 3 all-time NCAA record. His 20.18 time sits first in the world.

Andrew Hudson ran alongside Divine Oduduru, also outpacing Oduduru’s former school record time of 20.49 with his new lifetime-best run of 20.42. Hudson’s mark sits second in the world 200-meter rankings.

President Buhari commends the women’s bobsleigh team made up of Seun Adigun, Ngozi Onwumere and Akuoma Omeoga for making history by being the first African bobsleigh team to participate in the Winter Olympics in that category.

The President also salutes Nigerian Olympian, Simidele Adeagbo who has raised the bar as the first African female to compete in Skeleton at the Games, assuring the athletes that Nigeria stands with them throughout the competition.

President Buhari believes that the patriotism, sacrifice, hard work and personal dedication of these Nigerian athletes, who chose to stand with our homeland and lift our flag high at the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium in South Korea, will continue to inspire Nigerians, especially our young people.

A 24-year-old woman, Bimpe Adeite, who allegedly stole a generator valued N70,000 belonging to a male friend, risks three-year imprisonment if found guilty. The court heard that Adeite sold the generator and spent the proceeds on hair and skin creams.

The accused was, on Friday, brought before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, on a charge of stealing. Her address is unknown.

Akpan Uko, the police prosecutor, told the court that the accused committed the offence on January 26 at No. 13, Adamu St., Itoga, Badagry. He said the generator belonged to Mr. Denis Akanbi, a friend of the accused.

“The accused went to spend time with the complainant, so when he was not around on this particular day, she decided to steal the generator and sell it.

“She spent the money on her hair and cream products,” the prosecutor said.

Uko said the offence was punishable under Section 285 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the offence.

Chief Magistrate Jimoh Adefioye granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100,000 and a surety who must provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the case until March 1 for further hearing. (NAN)

Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Otunba Gani Adams, has vowed to resist any move aimed at killing people at will in his territory.

Reacting to the killing on Tuesday night of the Officer-in-Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Saki Unit, Oyo State Police Command, by suspected Fulani, the traditional ruler urged President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently address the crises.

Adams wants the president to mandate security agents to arrest killers herders in the country and bring them to justice, to avoid a total breakdown of law and order.“The first fundamental right of a Nigerian is the right to life. It is when you are alive that you can enjoy other rights.

Once this right is taken away from you through killings and murder, you cannot enjoy any other right. Nigerians demand right to life. More than a thousand Nigerians have been killed in the last one year. Is Nigeria at war? There is more to all these killings,” Special Assistant on Media to Adams, Kehinde Aderemi, said in Lagos.

“The diplomacy of the Yoruba on national issues, especially when it borders on security, should not be misconstrued as cowardice. It is part of our nature to accommodate people from other ethnic nationalities but now, our people cannot go to their farms again because of the fear of the unknown.

The Federal Government must immediately check activities of these killers to avoid plunging the country into an avoidable war.

“There is no war in Nigeria, there is no famine, no earthquake, but the number of IDPs in the country is more than what obtains in a country where war is going on. Murder of Nigerians, including pregnant women and children, continues every day. What is really going on?

“Perception is everything. The Federal Government is not helping its own image with the belief by Nigerians that the presidency is always silent when the issue concerns Fulani herdsmen.”

Boko Haram has released some 10 policewomen, and University Maiduguri lecturers abducted last year while on an oil exploration trip in the Northeast of Nigeria.

The victims were kidnapped in a raid by the militant group on a military/police convoy on Damboa road, near Maiduguri.

Their release followed a series of negotiations as directed by President Buhari and was facilitated by the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC.

According to the brief given by the DSS, all 13 rescued persons are in the custody of the service and are on their way to Abuja with the assistance of the Nigerian Army and the Air Force.

In expectation of their being brought to the DSS headquarters, a team of doctors and psychologists has been placed on standby.

The rescued persons may be presented to the President and thereafter released to their families, if there are no issues of security or medical concerns.

The President, who got step by step progress reports on the lengthy negotiations while they took place, received the good news with a lot of happiness.

He commended all those who in one way or the other helped in making the release possible.

He then urged the DSS and the Nigerian Army to intensify efforts to bring home the remaining Chibok Girls still in the custody of the terrorists.

The Director-General, Malam Lawal Daura, assured the President that they were working hard to bring home the remaining girls and, as soon as possible, bring the Chibok Girls to an end.
