‘We Don’t Owe N-Power Participants Salaries’- Acting President Osinbajo Insists

The acting President Yemi Osinbajo, has said the Federal Government did not owe N-empower employees backlog of salaries.

This is even as he disclosed that about 2.3 million youths had applied for the second batch of the National Social Investment Programmes (NSIP), meant to absorb additional 300,000.

The portal for NPower to absorbed additional 300,000 into the 2017/2018 phase was reopened on June 13.

Scores of beneficiaries of the NPower job initiative protested against non-payment of their monthly stipends since December last year.

Osinbajo, during a visit to the N-Power Response Center at the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), said all those whose Bank Verification Number (BVN) had been verified had been paid, adding that verification was necessary in order not to pay the wrong people.

Responding to questions from newsmen after visiting the Response Center on complaints of backlog of salaries, Osinbajo said: “There is no such thing as a backlog.

If your BVN is verified and everything is checked, then you are paid. There is a problem if your BVN does not match the records you gave. If there is a problem with any of your records you cannot be paid.

The moment your records are cleared, then you are paid constantly. If you don’t correct these records, then you might be paying the wrong people.”

The acting President said: “Already 200,000 young people have been engaged. And since the programme was opened, another 2.3 million have applied and we are looking at the next phase of engagement.

“But for me, I think what is important is that we are able to do this incrementally and we are able to give hope to some of these young people who need the opportunity.”

“You will recall that the target was 500,000 but depending on our resources, we can always do more but the target for now is 500,000.

Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has stressed that he has dropped Mathew from his names, even though it made it to his birth names.

The former Nigerian President who disclosed this at an event organized in his honour by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) , said he dropped the name because of the Biblical character, Mathew, whom he was named after, was a tax collector.

“When I was born, my mother and father decided to name me Matthew. I grew up being called and addressed Matthew. What is the meaning of Matthew in the Bible? He was a tax collector,” he said.

“So, when I grew up, I dropped Matthew from my name. If anyone does not want to see my eyes red, no one should call me Matthew again. People ask, what is in a name? For me, there is so much in a name.”

“A doctor’s mistake often leads to the death of one patient,” he said.

“A lawyer’s mistake leads to the client going to jail. But if an engineer makes a mistake that leads to the collapse of a bridge or house, many people would lose their lives.

“That is why engineers must be very careful and must be efficient not to allow mistakes to be made.”

After weeks of anticipation, Aston Villa fans have finally got to see John Terry taking the field in claret and blue for the first time.

A South African Hospital (Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Soweto) allegedly frustrated the efforts of the Cross River State Government to fly a football fan victim to South Africa following the electrocution of football fans at a viewing centre in Calabar.

Mr Ferdinand Anok until he passed on Tuesday was an Inspector of Immigration with the Cross River State command who was among the eleven (11) football fans that sustained various level of injuries at a make shift viewing centre when a high tension cable fell on the roof.

They were watching the Europa League match between Manchester United and Anderlecth on April 20, 2017.

Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River after visiting the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) where some of the victims were taken to ordered that Anok be flown abroad for specialist medical attention.

The Cross River State Ministry of Health according to a Press statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ayade, Mr Christian Ita, and made available to DAILY POST contacted a hospital in South Africa (Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Soweto).

“The hospital instructed that state government to make a deposit before they can process a letter of acceptance for Mr. Anok’s visa approval. The state government duly acceded to the request and deposited the required amount.”

Shockingly, Mr Ita revealed that after the payment had been made, the hospital management rejected Mr. Anok saying they do not accept foreigners in their facility. “A clear case of xenophobia” CPS lamented..

Consequently, the state government communicated with International SOS who in turn linked the government with several specialist hospitals abroad with capacity to manage the degree of burns Mr. Anok suffered and of which hospitals in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and India indicated interest in his management.

“Apollo Hospital, India was the first to send in a letter accepting to manage him. Following this the government took Mr. Anok to the Indian embassy to get a visa where three days were spent trying to regularise documents due to the peculiarity of the case”

But Mr Ita lamented that it was a Herculean task getting him on board the aircraft because of the degree of burns. It took almost two months for Mr. Anok’s international passport to be returned from the Indian embassy and in between government was in constant communication with them.

“By the time the visa was ready his case had deteriorated, despite constant optimal specialist care, including multiple surgeries, debridement, fasciotomy and colostomy in UCTH Calabar and General hospital Calabar” Ita said.

“Doctors were preparing him for fitness to travel before he drifted into a comatose state. Sadly, all attempts to improve his Glasgow Coma Scale proved abortive and he finally passed on”. Daily Post has exclusively reported that Anok’s death brought the total number of the victims that died to eight. The victims of the tragic incident were hospitalised at the UCTH for various degrees of injuries.

It was gathered that of these numbers (11 persons) hospitalised; six have been discharged while four were still on sick bed. The Chief Medical Director of UCTH, Prof. Thomas Agan confirmed the dead of Anok in a telephone interview. He said he was called around 2am to be informed about the death. “I was called at around 2am to be informed that he has passed on” he said.

The mother of the deceased, Mrs Maria Mbua-Bisong said her son died around 1am on Tuesday at the UCTH. Hear her, “Over two months now, my son has been under serious heart pains. We have been moving from one hospital to the other. The pains were increasing by the day. After over two months of the incident, he finally gave up at around 1am”

The Police at the time of the incident confirmed that seven person died in the incident that happened around 9.30pm at Nyagasang, Atimbo area in Calabar Municipal local government area of the state.

A teenage father with a tattoo covering half his face with tattoo has cried out over his struggle to get a job. 19 year old Mark Cropp, who was recently released from prison, put a plea out on Facebook saying his facial tattoo was stopping him securing employment.

He also said his tattoo which is not gang affiliated- wasn’t planned and was not supposed to be quite as big. He got it a number of months ago while in prison serving a two year and three month sentence in the Otago Correction Facility for aggravated robbery, the NZ Herald reports.

Cropp said he was going through a ‘rough patch’ with people trying to bully him at the time and believed people were more cautious around those with tattoos in prison.

He said he’s been told he wouldn’t be employed with “that on his face,” and had people shrug and laugh at him.

Cropp took a selfie, which he posted on Auckland Jobs Facebook page with the description: “Hey im keen as to work but have one thing that is stoping me and thats my tattoo on my face i dont have a cv as of yet but have worked at nz brick distrabuters b4 also a scrap metal yard im 19 years of age and have my lerners license.

He Beats Me Blue-black, Cut My Hair, Woman Tells Court

A woman, Taiwo Akande, has approached Ile Tuntun Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking the dissolution of her union to her husband, Muniru Akande.

Taiwo, in her suit pleaded with the court to end her 14-year-old marriage to her husband on the basis of neglect and battery. She further prayed the court to grant her custody of their three children.

“I’m yet to meet a man who is as irresponsible as my husband. When he was courting me he promised heaven and earth, but he failed to carry out his promises when we got married.

“He finds it a task feeding me and our three children. He rushes out of home in the morning so as not to leave feeding allowance and sneaks in at night when the children and I would have gone to bed.

“I reported him to his brother who mandated him to give me N4, 000 monthly as feeding allowance. He did this twice and stopped.

“I struggle to make ends meet, but he has no shame. Anytime I cook, he sits down comfortably and eat

“After eating he says ‘Thank You’ by beating me blue-black.

“Our family members have often mediated in our differences, but he has refused to change.

“He was always complaining about my hair; according to him, I adorn my head to attract the opposite s3x. A quarrel ensued between us over this issue. After beating me, he cut off my hair with a scissors.

“He then informed my parents of what he had done. They felt insulted.

“He told me to pack out of his house or else he would kill me.

“When I insisted I wasn’t leaving, he threw me out. I left with the youngest child, while the other two were with him.

“He took them to his sister who later called me to come for them when she was travelling.

“My husband went to pick our youngest child from his school and took him to an alfa to live with. His formal education was stopped while he was introduced to Arabic education.

“This alfa was in the habit of calling me whenever the child was in need and would send someone to collect money or the item from me.

“This alfa’s address was kept away from me, but I later got to know it. I traced the address and on getting there, I met my son looking emaciated and carrying firewood. I couldn’t hold back my tears. broke down and wept.

“My lord, I pray the court to grant me custody of my children so as to give them proper care.

The defendant did not accede to divorce.

He stated thus: “My lord, I don’t agree to divorce because my wife has been supportive of me. I’m in soup if she leaves me.

“I care for my wife and children. Our son was sent away from school when I couldn’t afford his school fees any more. The present economic recession caused it.

“I didn’t send her packing. It was her mother who came to pack her things out of my house.”

Ruling, the court president, Chief Agbaje Olasunkanmi, dissolved their marriage and ordered the defendant to pay N7, 500 monthly as feeding allowance for their three children.

He was also to be responsible for their education and health care.

No Nigerian Will Be Left Out As Federal Government Begins New Tax Drive

The FG also disclosed that tax evaders will soon find staying in the country difficult.

Nigeria’s minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun made this known in Lagos at a lecture at PWC’s Business School, with the theme: ‘Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) Interactive Session for Executives and Business Owners.’

The government has also engaged the services of asset tracing-companies to investigate the tax payment status of 150 firms/individuals.

The minister also disclosed that tax defaulters will be investigated.

“We are working alongside projects we have locally, like the Bank Verification Number (BVN), records of property ownership, records of property allocation, records of company ownership from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), among others. It is from these projects that we look at how much tax such companies or individuals should be paying”.

”The investigators’ findings will enable us compare the income and how much tax the company/person is really paying, and that gives us lots of information. But we encourage people to come up and pay their taxes willingly.”

“You can register a high-end car. It tells me something about your income. So we look at your tax returns. If you registered Mercedes E-Class and you are paying N100,000 tax, then something is wrong. Those are red flags. We now have the capacity to assess people accurately.”

Going further, she said no Nigerian would be left out in the campaign to enlarge the tax net, noting that some beggars were earning millions.

She said the government will look at their lifestyles and tax them, adding that “even proceeds from begging are taxable. You are supposed to pay taxes even if your means of income is begging”.

The government said it engaged the services of Kroll, a United Kingdom-based forensic and assets-tracing organisation, to carry out this investigation.

Revealed: Why Evans The Kidnapper’s Lawyer Was Fined N20,000 In Court

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, yesterday, awarded a cost of N20,000 against Mr Olukoya Ogungbeje, counsel to suspected kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, a. k. a Evans.

Trail judge, Justice Abdulazeez Anka also warned Ogungbeje to desist from practices unbecoming of a legal practitioner.

The judge said this while adjourning the fundamental rights suit on behalf of Evans by Ogungbeje, over alleged illegal detention.

Respondents in the suit are the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Police Command, the Commissioner of Police Lagos State and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

Evans had sought a court’s order directing the respondents to immediately charge him to court in accordance with constitutional provisions, if there existed any case against him.

In the alternative, he had prayed the court for an order, compelling the respondents to immediately release him unconditionally in the absence of any charge.

The case, which was scheduled for yesterday, could not proceed as Ogungbeje was absent in court.

When the case was called, a litigation officer from Ogungbeje’s law firm, Mr Stephen Abunike, told the court that his principal was indisposed and had written a letter seeking an adjournment.

In response, counsel to the Police, Mr Emmanuel Eze, told the court that he had only sighted the letter in court, noting that the letter was signed by one Saheed Sanni, a lawyer in Ogungbeje’s law firm.

Eze urged the court to reject the excuse and consider same as an affront to the court, adding that it showed that the law firm was unserious, as well award a punitive cost of N100,000 against the applicant and his counsel.

In a short ruling, Justice Anka awarded a punitive cost of N20,000 against Ogungbeje for what he described as unprofessional conduct.

The judge noted that while Ogungbeje had written a letter to the court, he did not send a copy of the letter to the counsel for the police.
