Two residents, Bashirat Rauf, a mother of two and Sodiq Saka of Araromi Quarters in Ketu, Lagos State, were both electrocuted when fire engulfed a school nearby.

Bashirat Rauf was said to have rushed out of her apartment when she saw fire burning from a cable in a nearby school.

She reportedly decided to quickly pick her children who were playing outside in order to avoid being engulfed by the fire unfortunately, she got electrocuted in the process.

Meanwhile, 33 year old plank seller,Sodiq Saka, was said to have gone to fetch water to put off the fire in the school premises when he saw flame coming out of their compound and he got electrocuted in the process.

According to Mr. Saka Imam, The father of late Sodiq,

“As a Muslim, I have accepted my fate. There is nothing I could do to bring the dead back to life. “We were to gather on that fateful day. He was the one who slaughtered the Sallah ram he bought for me.

After that, he told me he was coming to get something down the street, only for someone to come and call me that my son had been electrocuted in the neighbourhood.

I was told by some witnesses at the scene of the incident that my son only went into the compound of the school premises where it was burning to assist the owner of the house, only for him to be electrocuted by the falling cable.

Sodiq was said to had stepped on the naked cable while trying to put off the fire. What else do I do, I cannot give birth to a grown up boy like him.”

The Secretary of Araromi Community Development Association, Mr.Wahab Awoyemi , described the incident as a very sad one for the residents of Araromi community.
He said:

“It was very sad for us to loose two persons in a day.The woman was in her apartment that fateful day preparing meal, when information got to her that the school near their apartment was burning.

She rushed out to pick her children who were playing outside their compound and stepped on the naked cable. She was electrocuted immediately.

“We made serious effort to rescue both of them. We went to Eko distribution company office at mile 12 to switch off the light.

The person who was supposed to switch off the power was said not be on duty. But with providence, they took off the power.

It was after then we were able to remove them from the burning cable and took them to a private hospital in the community where they were later pronounced dead by the medical doctor of the hospital.”

“Before the ugly incident, we called on Eko Disco officials to come fix the cable before it will kill someone in the community. They did not come until two lives were consumed. We want government to come to our aid in the community.

I believe such marriages lack trust and understanding. Many men can’t tolerate seeing their wives playing sexual roles. Also, many people believe that we (actors) practice what we act in the films. Another factor responsible for marriage collapse is that many women try to change their husbands after marriage, this brings disarray into the home. Women needs to be more cautious.

Yes, we trust and understand each other.

Some people wonder why you and your husband have not been cast as spouses in a film ?

That is not true. That means they do not watch some of my films.

Some say it is because both of you don’t suit each other as spouses on set?

It is not possible for two adults to live under the same roof for over ten years if they are not compatible. I am happily married. He loves me for who I am and I love him too.

Some of your fans are also of the opinion that you don’t go to public places with your husband, how true is this?

This means this group of fans are not watching us closely. We attend some functions together especially when it involves our colleagues. I agree that my husband doesn’t really socialise, he is more of an introvert.

And you seem to be the opposite of that, how do you manage?

(Laughs) I am a woman and needs to be seen. Some frustrated husbands try to hide their wives but my husband is beyond that.

Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has written Senate President Bukola Saraki, asking him not to take any action on the White Paper issued by Governor Nyesom Wike against him and his administration and the petition sent to the Senate by Livingstone Wechie accusing him of corruption.

Amaechi, who is a ministerial nominee from Rivers State have been having a running battle with the State government and its lawmakers, who are opposed to his nomination and appointment by President Muhamadu Buhari.

The state and the lawmakers want Amaechi to be dropped, accusing him of having made the state to lose huge revenue when he was governor for eight years. The opposition against him informed the postponement of his screening twice last week when 18 other nominees were cleared by the upper legislative chamber.

Tuesday, October 13, was a horrible day for a staff of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company and his family as he was electrocuted while doing his job.

According to the eye witness who sent in the photos, the young man whose name is unknown at the moment, came with his crew and started work. In less than 10 minutes that he started working, Power was restored.

A load shout was heard by all that were around there and when the looked up to see what happened, they found the man in that position.

According to another eye witness, it took about 30 minutes to get him down from that height, after which he was taken to the hospital. Information reaching me today says the man died that same day.

What a loss… Is this a case of carelessness or wickedness?

An 18-year-old girl has been ambushed and gang-raped by six gun-wielding men in the Somolu area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim, Blessing (pseudonym), was returning from a visit to an uncle’s house at about 8pm on Saturday when she was attacked by the hoodlums, suspected to be cultists, on Olaosebikan Street, Bajulaiye, in the Somolu area.

Our correspondent gathered that the teenager, who was with the suspected rapists for about four hours, was threatened with a gun to “cooperate” with her assailants.

It was learnt that Blessing was taken for medical treatment at the Mirabel Centre, Ikeja, after which the matter was reported at the Alade Police Division.

It was, however, gathered that the suspected rapists fled the area before the police could arrest them.

When PUNCH Metro visited Blessing in her parents’ house, the victim, who worked as a computer operator, said the men raped her after they had accused her of being a lover to a member of a rival cult group.

Blessing, who said she had been asked out by some of the suspected rapists on several occasions without positive response from her, added that they took advantage of the fact that the area was deserted on Saturday.

She said, “It was at about 8pm on Saturday. I was returning from a visit when the guys surrounded me around Olaosebikan Street. They carried me into an apartment called Elewure’s House around Bajulaiye Compound.

“They forced me into a room in the house and took turns To Molest me. They were six in number, but I know five of them. They are Raheem, Oriyomi, Sulaimon, Dudu, Orobo and Ronaldo. As each of them raped me, one of them pressed a gun against me, saying if I did not cooperate, they would kill me.

“I was with them till around 12am. Two of them walked me to a street near where I lived. I was tired.

“On the second day, I went to the Alade Police Division to make a report, and I was also taken to the Mirabel Centre in Ikeja for medical treatment.

“The hoodlums claimed that I was dating a cultist. They said they had asked me several times to date them but I refused. They said they would teach me a lesson. I want the police to arrest these men. I cannot go to work for now.”

When our correspondent visited Olaosebikan Street, it was gathered that one of the six hoodlums, known as Makayoko, returned from the Kirikiri Prison last year after serving an eight-year jail term for violence.

A security official in the area, who identified himself only as Comrade, told PUNCH Metro that the Elewure boys belonged to the Eiye cult group.

He added that each of them had a gun and robbed passersby, especially women, in the evenings.

He said, “There was an uncompleted building on Olaosebikan Street where they used to hide their weapons, and take women To Molest them. Later, when the house was completed, they started using the Elewure’s House. They also terrorise Olatunde, Humani and Akinrinlo streets.

“On Tuesday, the Divisional Police Officer of Alade came to the Bajulaiye Compound to hold a meeting with the residents on how these hoodlums would be apprehended. It was decided at that meeting that we would hand them over to the police, anywhere we saw them. One of the policemen told me that the suspects raped the girl two rounds each.

“It was very serious. But we are going to work with the police to get them.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, confirmed the gang rape, adding that the police were intensifying efforts to apprehend the suspects.

He said, “We are on the trail of the suspects. We have not arrested any of them for now, but we will get them.”

THERE was pandemonium at the B Division Police Station Warri as a physically challenged man, Samson Akpofure scaled the over 10 feet fence into the station.

According to the source, “I was in a popular brothel in Ginuwa street to carry out investigation and Police raided the place and arrested all of us. At the station I introduce myself as a journalist and my mission and the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Eyoh Anietie who led the operation set me free.

“When I was about leaving at about 11pm, I saw the station guard barking orders and other police who partook in the night raid rushed there and the disabled man was arrested after scaling the high fence.

“The police were shocked how a one legged man can jump that height. On interrogation he confessed to come from Essi Layout area of Warri.”

A police source who confirmed the incident said that the suspect could not explain his mission to the newly fenced police station.

He added that the suspect could be a member of criminal gang who may have planned to invade the police using the disabled man for the attack as was in the case in the recent Kwara State commercial bank attack

World Shipowners’ Association (WSA) has appointed Nigeria-born Forbes billionaire and President of Slok Group, Orji Uzor Kalu as interim president of the body.

Kalu, an eminent businessman and former governor of Abia State will occupy the position pending the election of substantive officials at the proposed Marine Conference scheduled for Greece in Q3 2017.

The maritime industry globally is set to meet its full potential following the unveiling of an umbrella body for all national, regional and international associations of ship owners called World Shipowners’ Association (WSA).

The association which was established in furtherance to the adoption of the agreement of the international maritime round table (IMRT) held in Washington DC, USA, on Monday, October 2, 2015, had in attendance mainly owners of container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, fishing vessels, barges, specialized ships and ferries from 29 countries, including the United States of America, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Russia, Nigeria, Denmark, Norway and others.

In a press release signed by WSA’s interim Director of Strategy and Communications, Isaac Marshall, he acknowledged the efforts of stakeholders in advocating regional and international co-operation among national and regional bodies towards the growth and development of marine business globally, noting that the association will primarily serve as the universal representative of the shipping industry worldwide.

The statement reads in part: “Today, we are excited to announce the birth of the much-awaited international co-operation among players in the maritime industry. The team‘s mandate is to effectively drive membership and engagement of existing maritime associations across the world towards the inauguration of national and regional secretariats across the globe and advocacy visits to the United Nations agencies, African Export-Import Bank, Export-Import Bank of the United States, among others. The interim team is also expected to set up steering committees for various purposes in order to run an all-inclusive and sustainable business platform.

The Police Command in Katsina State says it has killed one suspected kidnapper and rescued two children in the Dandume Local Government Area of the state.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Usman Abdullahi, made the announcement on Friday while briefing journalists on the incident.
He said that kidnappers had invaded Mahuta Village in the Local Government Area on four motorcycles.

Mr. Abdullahi said that the hoodlums entered the residence of one Rabiu Maidara on Oct. 10 and demanded huge sum of money from him.

He said that when they could not get the money, they abducted two of his children at gun point.

Mr. Abdullahi said the family immediately reported the matter to the police for prompt action.

He noted that the police pursued the kidnappers and had an exchange of gun fire with them, leading to the killing of one of the kidnappers, while the three others fled.

Mr. Abdullahi said the abducted children were rescued without sustaining injury.

The commissioner said the police recovered four motorcycles, one AK 47 rifle, ammunition, cutlasses, mobile phone, two clothing materials and N2, 000 cash.

He called on the public to continue to provide useful information to the police that would assist the force to make the state crime free.

“Our response to distress call used to be within five minutes, but we have reduced it to three minutes,” he said.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday arrested ex-Governor Godswill Akpabio for allegedly misappropriating N101.8billion while he was governor of Akwa-Ibom State and plunging the state into huge indebtedness.

Akpabio was taken into custody for interrogation by EFCC operatives at about 5.20 pm. He was accompanied by a few of his aides and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria Ricky Tarfa.

Findings show that the present governor of Akwa Ibom state, Udom Emmanuel laundered colossal amount of money for Akpabio and that was why he was rewarded with the governor’s seat.

According to sources within EFCC, Akpabio left the EFCC headquarters at about 9.pm on Friday after responding to questions by the anti-graft agency’s top officials.

The naira yesterday depreciated against the dollar at the parallel market. The naira lost N0.5 in the afternoon as it exchanged for N225.5 against the dollar, slightly less than its previous value of N225.

Meanwhile, at the interbank window, the naira exchanged at N197 to the dollar.

Traders at the market said that the demand for dollar had been on the increase as businessmen and travellers bought it for various reasons.

Rock formations  are common features of Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, and its neighbouring villages even as  Abeokuta – people who live under the rocks – derived its name from there.

While some of the rocks which were formed centuries ago, according to geologists, are tourist sites such as the Olumo Rock. Others situating in remote areas, remained veritable sources of granites and stones in commercial quantities to people within and outside the state, for construction works.

And some of the residents, acting on the eroneous belief that  rocks neither die nor decay, and perhaps because of the cool ambience they are said to engender at night, elected to erect their homes near or below those rocks, while others build atop of them, including altars of prayer, especially those who attached spiritual conotation to rocks.

So far, since 1830 AD when the Egba people arrived and settled in Abeokuta, both the rocks and the residents had co-habited with each other and safely, too, not even the earth tremor that occured in the city in 1986 could rupture that hundreds of years of living safely near rocks.

But penultimate Friday, that changed. A ‘treacherous’ rock in Iberekodo, Abeokuta, crushed four persons, including mother, two children and a grandchild, to death when it tipped off its base and rammed lethally on them after knocking down the wall of their bedroom.

The rocky Iberekodo community in Abeokuta North Local Government Council of Ogun state were left in shock and grief.

However, the man of the house, Ismail Lawal, Sukurat and Rofiat, survived the assault on the modest home by the deadly rock because they happened to be relaxing at the sitting room when it struck but they incurred serious injuries.

The victims – Mrs Silifat Lawal, her two children: Rasheedat (15), Semia (4) and a grandchild Mariam –  had barely fallen into a deep sleep on their bed after a Friday dinner when the rock killed them.

The Nation gathered that the rock has been in existence in Iberekodo community before the Egba people settled in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, around 1830 AD.

Some of the villagers said the heavy downpour that fateful day, which they claimed  softened the base of the rock situating on a location overlooking Ismail Lawal’s home, caused the ground to give way. According to them, the rock, having lost its balance, tumbled and rolled lethally on Lawal’s home beneath.

Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and Senate Minority Leader, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has returned to his Abuja residence after his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Friday, affirming that he has nothing to hide about his term in office as the governor of Akwa Ibom State.

Akpabio, who was governor of the state between 2007 and 2015, was yesterday invited at about 5. 20pm to the Abuja Headquarters of the EFCC, over a petition dated June 22, 2015 and addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the EFCC.

The petitioner whose name was given as Leo Ekpenyong alleged that Akpabio, fraudulently converted N108.1bn belonging to Akwa Ibom State during his tenure as governor.

Using the Twitter handle, @SenAkpabio managed by his social media team, the ex-Governor disclosed that he has arrived home some hours after.

According to the tweets, “His Excellency, Senator Akpabio is back to the house. We want to reaffirm that he has nothing whatsoever to hide about his term in office in Akwa Ibom.”

In an earlier tweet, @SenAkpabio had tweeted: “Senator Akpabio was never arrested. He simply obliged an invitation to come and answer some questions at the EFCC headquarters.

“Senator Akpabio has nothing to hide that’s why he walked into EFCC himself this evening to answer questions about his tenure in Akwa Ibom.

“Those who are playing politics with the decision of Senator Akpabio to honour the EFCC invitation must be acting a known script.

“Senator Akpabio was called from EFCC to come for explanations and he drove there himself 50 minutes later. So, why all the news of arrest?” his team asked.
