Call him a victim of circumstance and you will not be far from the truth. All he did was go to his friend’s place to charge his mobile phone, an action that has seen him spend the last two years behind bars.

The above has been the fate of 28-year-old Rotimi Adeosebekan who was arrested on November 15, 2017 alongside others by Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives from Abuja at the instance of a lawyer alleged to be embroiled in a property tussle at 8, Agorodiyan in Victoria Island with one Segun Babaloye.

Following a Save Our Soul (SOS) appeal by Adeosebekan’s aged mother, Mrs. Folasade, our correspondent made findings and discovered that the victim was being held alongside Olayinka John, Ismaila Fatasi, Joseph Adeniran, Thompson Emmanuel and Kolawole Seun at the Keffi Prison in Nasawara State on charges of armed robbery, kidnapping and terrorism.

But neither Adeosebekan nor his co-defendants understand why fate dealt them a huge blow and allowed the police to rob them of their freedom.

Narrating his ordeal to our correspondent, Rotimi said: “The worst part is that I did not know anything about the fight. I learnt that the late landlord’s son and a tenant who’s a lawyer fought over property. I do not even stay there; I just went to charge my phone at my friends’ place. My friends were working as guards employed by the late landlord’s son.

“So, that day, policemen just came and packed all of us. They took us to Abattoir in Abuja and three days later, they took us to a Magistrate’s Court where they accused us of stealing jewellery and phone belonging to the lawyer. We denied it and then, the police took us back to Abbatoir and we were there for over two months.

“After that day, the man said unless we provided Mr. Segun Babaloye, he will not let us go. He said he bought the house from Segun’s father Pa Babaloye when he was alive and that Segun.

“It was after that period that they now took us before Justice Binta Nyako of Federal High Court III and charged us for armed robbery, kidnapping and terrorism. We have been in prison custody since that time.

“The police made such huge allegations against people without any evidence. The worst part is that I did not know any of these things and I am not involved. My friends are not involved either. Some of those arrested with me were eating yam outside, while others were security men.

“It is unfair how we have been made to suffer over a case that does not concern us. This is a typical case of the grass suffering when two elephants fight. I am appealing to President Muhammadu Buhari to order an investigation into this case so that the truth can come to light and we can go home.

“I am begging them to release us because we did not do anything. We are innocent. Our case is coming up on November 20 but November 15 will be exactly two years we were arrested and locked up,” he told our Correspondent.

It was gathered Seun, an Oodua People’s Congress’ (OPC) Chief Security Officer (CSO) was arrested at his Ajegunle residence 15 days after the others were rounded and whisked to the same cell in Abuja were the others were held.

The Nation gathered that the policemen who embarked on.thag mission had asked him to provide his boss’ number which he did and he was thereafter dumped in custody with the rest.

Appealing to the President to release her son, 63-year-old Mrs. Adeosebekan said she has sold all she had in order to frequent Abuja to visit him.

The woman who sobbed uncontrollably said her health was failing as a result of the continued detention of her son for a crime he did not commit.

“I have been going up and down since 2017. I developed issues with one of my legs because of that long journey. I have spent more than N200,000 on this matter but my son has not come out.

“It was my son who used to help me sell my Agbo (local herb) and since his arrest, I have not been doing it. Now, I do not have anything. It is my Alex Omorodion in Alausa (Public Advice Centre) that has been helping me. I am begging those holding my son to release him. I know my son and I know that he is not a criminal,” she said.

Management of the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State, has suspended some students over alleged involvement in a peaceful demonstration.

Those affected are the Mayors and Mayoress of halls of residence, including that of Hall 5 and Keystone hostels. All the three persons are undergraduate students.

CAMPUS GIST reliably gathered that the said protest was led by postgraduate students in first semester. The school is currently in second semester.

The protesters were said to have demonstrated to the official residence of the vice-chancellor, otherwise known as VC lodge, in protest against non-availability of power.

It was gathered that the hostels lacked electricity and water for over three days during exam period, forcing the students to take to protests.

Their suspension was announced by the university Registrar, Mrs O. A. Oshodin, in a private letter exclusively obtained by CAMPUS GIST on Friday.

“You will recall your alleged involvement in a case of unlawful protest and at an unholy hour”, she said in the letter obtained by our UNIBEN correspondent.

“The Vice Chancellor, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 17 (b), (c), and (d) of Edict No. 3 of 1975, and as amended by Decree No. 20 of 1975, has directed that you be suspended from all academic activities forthwith until you before the Security Department for clearance.

“Accordingly, you are hereby suspended from your Faculty and the University until get clearance from the Security Department”, added Mrs Oshodin.

Efforts to reach the Registrar for comment proved abortive, even as calls placed to the known phone lines of the university spokesman, Michael Osasuyi, went unanswered.

But an official of the school who would not like to be mentioned, said the university took the decision because the VC was disturbed from sleep at such “ungodly hour.”

On why the affected persons were suspended even when they are not directly involved, the official said the suspended persons were expected to have managed the situation.

“They failed in their duties as halls’ mayors and mayoress, respectively”, he said, adding, “they are expected to handle any of such cases from escalating especially at such ungodly hour.”

One of the affected persons who craved anonymity, told CAMPUS GIST that he was shocked to hear about his suspension from his hostel porter.

“The protest was led by postgraduate students [last semester] because they had no light in their hostels for over three days”, he said.

“Nobody even heard about it except for members of the Committee on Hostel Matters. Even myself, I wasn’t aware not until my attention was drawn after the protest had begun.

“It was a peaceful demonstration, though the protest was taken to the VC’s lodge which is a normal thing in the university. Sadly, management accused us of spearheading the protest”, said the hall mayor.

This is not the first time UNIBEN will be suspending her students over demonstrations. In February, 2018 four union members were expelled from the school over a protest against an increment in tuition fee.

The expelled students were accused of staging a students’ demonstration on November 24, 2017, an action the university authorities described as intended to disrupt the institution’s 47th Founders’ Day Lecture and the 43rd Convocation Ceremony.

Those suspended include the then Student Union president, Osemudiamen Elvis; PRO, Ehiabhi Goodnews; Secretary-General, Justus Aidenagbon; Director of Socials, Innocent Ehiozua, and a renowned activist, Benjamin Majekodunmi, alias Sankara.

They were later recalled to the school following the intervention of external forces, including the university chancellor and Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

A Kano Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded Khalid Abdullahi, 20, in a correctional facility for allegedly defiling a three-year-old girl.

Abdullahi, who resides at Yankaba Quarters Kano, is facing prosecution for rape, an offence contrary to Section 283 of the Penal Code.

Chief Magistrate, Muhammad Jibril, ordered the remand of the accused person in a correctional facility and adjourned the matter until Oct. 28, for further mention.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Pogu Lale told the court that one Mohammed Saddam of Badawa Quarters Kano, reported the matter at Bompai Police Division, Kano, on Sept. 22.

“On Sept.21, at about 2:00 p.m., the accused deceived and lured the complainant’s three-year-old daughter into his sister’s apartment upstairs located at Badawa Quarters Kano and had unlawful sexual intercourse with her.

“The violation of the minor caused her bodily harm,’’ NAN quoted him as saying.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

The Christian Association of Nigeria has warned the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) to stop associating Christ with criminality.

CAN issue the warning over MURIC’s director, Ishaq Akintola’s comment on the abduction and conversion of 9 Kano children who were reunited with their parents after 5 years.

Akintola said: “kidnapping for Christ is disgusting, nauseating, wicked and reprehensible. Kidnappers have taken over the house of God. The phenomenon of kidnapping for Christ has now rented the air. We are shocked to our marrows.”

Joseph Hayab, chairman of CAN in the northern region who reacted to the MURIC Director’s comment described it as “irresponsible, derogatory and provocative.”

He added that there is nothing like kidnapping for Christ. “Criminals abound in everywhere and in every religion, for MURIC to say a crime was perpetrated for Christ, is sheer mischief aimed at provoking Christians,” he said.

“How could a rational, sane and educated person, associate the action of criminals to a religion? There are many instances where Christian girls were abducted, forcefully converted to Islam and married off by criminals in Northern Nigeria. In some of these cases, the police either refused to act or turned blind eyes.

“Will it be right to accuse all Muslims for the action of such criminals? The answer is no.“A particular group which belongs to a particular religious group has always been alleged to be responsible for the rampant kidnappings and banditry across the country, especially in the north, will it be right to say that they are committing the crime to promote their tribe or religion?

“We also have the case of Leah Sharibu who is still being held by Boko Haram insurgents for refusing to denounce her Christian faith and convert to Islam. No Christian has associated Muslims with such criminal acts.

“If we have any witness against the culprits behind the abduction, we will join hands with the people of Kano to testify against him or them in court.“There is nothing like kidnapping for Christ.

This evil kidnapper or child trafficker, knowing that he did not carry away the children for religion gave them new tribal names, MURIC should note.

“CAN northern states, therefore, condemned anybody carrying people’s children away and supports security agencies to investigate the matter and prosecute the culprits.

A hoodlum in Aguda, Surulere area of Lagos State, identified only as Lass, is on the run after stabbing a 12-year-old boy, Seyi, for defecating in front of a house.

He allegedly stabbed the boy in the hand and stomach and forced him to eat a portion of the faeces.

Seyi, an orphan and primary six pupil, hawks yam for his aunt whom he lives with in neighbouring Ijesha community.

City Round learnt that the boy had gone hawking on October 1, 2019 when he suddenly had the urge to use the toilet.

Unable to find a toilet around the area, he rushed to the front of the house on Joel Oguntade Street and emptied his bowel beside a gutter.

An elderly woman living in the compound reportedly sighted him and raised the alarm, attracting some residents to the scene.

One of the residents was said to have invited Lass and one other hoodlum who assaulted the boy.

A social worker with the Advocate for Children and Vulnerable Persons, Mr Lanre Akala, said the dehumanising treatment meted out to the boy was brought to his attention and he reported the case at the Aguda Police Station.

He said:

“The boy was hawking yam around Aguda for his aunt. We learnt his parents are dead. On the day the incident happened, he had the urge to use the toilet while he was hawking around 7pm. He excreted around a gutter in front of a house on 10, Joel Oguntade Street, Aguda.

“As he was defecating, an elderly woman came out and held him down. She called some men to beat him. The men then invited some area boys who stabbed him and forced him to eat the faeces. They forced it down his throat and gave him water to drink.

“The case was reported at the Aguda Police Station and three of them, including the woman, were arrested. We will follow through the case. The boy has been treated in a hospital.”

Seyi, a native of Ikale, Ondo State, who admitted what he did was wrong, told our correspondent that he resorted to open defecation because he could no longer hold the excreta.

He stated that one of the residents had flogged him before the hoodlums were invited, adding that the louts threatened to kill him if he refused to eat the faeces.

He said, “That Tuesday, I sold yam to someone and she asked me to wait and collect the money. As I was waiting for her, I was ‘pressed.’ I asked a man where I could poo but he shunned me. I then rushed to the front of a house and pooed in front of their gutter.

“A woman came and was shouting at me. People came outside and one of them started flogging me. After flogging me, they called two area boys. They (louts) said if I did not eat my shit (faeces), they would kill me. When I did not want to eat it, one of them stabbed me in my stomach and hand and forced me to eat the shit. They then gave me water. I know all of them.”

It was learnt that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the assault but they denied Seyi was fed with his faeces.

The case has been transferred to the Gender Unit at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja.

“One of the suspects admitted that he flogged the boy but he insisted that nobody forced him to eat his faeces and drink water as the boy claimed. The suspect said he flogged him the way he would punish his own child for engaging in such an act. The suspects are assisting the police to track the hoodlum who reportedly stabbed the boy,” a source told our correspondent.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, said the Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu, had ordered that thorough investigation be carried out on the case to ensure that the perpetrators were brought to book.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), has arrested at least nine suspected cybercriminals in Enugu.

The suspects were on Friday arrested at Mexmemphis Properties and Apartments, Maryland District of the State.

According to a statement by the spokesman of the commission, Wilson Uwujaren, the suspects are Precious Ibegbulem, Michael Odishi, Ebuka Kenneth, Akabuke Beluolisa, Chibueze Ezeagwu, Nnamdi Maduekwe, Kingsley Orazulike, Linda Chidera, and Uche Nwosu.

It added they were arrested following an intelligence report about their lifestyle and suspected criminal activities.

“On the strength of the information, the EFCC raided the home of the suspects and arrested them.

“Items recovered from them include mobile phones, laptop computers, two Toyota Corolla vehicles with the registration number DM 722 YAB and LSR 468 FW, etc.

“The suspects will be charged to court when the investigation is concluded,” Uwujaren stated.

The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man identified as Promise Uzoma for robbing a businessman of N4.4m jewelry in a robbery attack with his cousin Chukwuebuka Ogubuike, in which a housemaid was also raped.

Confessing to the crime when paraded before newsmen, Uzoma said he took to robbery after his N70,000 was stolen while sleeping in a bus. Uzoma said: “I bought the phone for N70,000. The native doctor asked me to pay N30,000 for the charm.

I gave him the money, but seven days after I made the payment, the person didn’t return my phone.”I went back to the native doctor and informed him that his charm didn’t work. He asked me to pay an additional N7000 so he could consult his oracle to know why his charms didn’t work.

Big Brother Naija, BBNaija 2019 winner Mercy has revealed that she started praying about participating on the reality TV show since January.

She made the revelation in an interview with Hero Daniels of Linda Ikeji TV, where she mentioned that she attended church programs and her dream to feature on the reality TV show was her major prayer point at the church programs.

She also revealed that she was rejected at the Warri Audition before going for another round of audition in Imo and was eventually picked.

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshimhole, has inaugurated two campaign councils for the forthcoming governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states, with a charge to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)

to go and learn new tactics of winning elections legally as electoral outcomes would no longer be determined by the barrel of the gun.

Both councils have 56 members apiece. Oshiomhole, who gave the charge on Friday in Abuja while inaugurating the councils, was specific that the people of Bayelsa have never really determined their leaders because their votes never counted.

“In Bayelsa, the heart of the people will be turned to elect a man that will make a difference, that will demonstrate that in a genuine democracy, very ordinary people who connect with their people,

who understand and live with their people and share the joy, pain, and aspirations of their people, even if they do not have the history of a political dynasty can rise to become a governor and I believe that is the story of our candidate in Bayelsa. “The reaction of PDP shows they are in trouble.

My very good friend, Gov. Dickson is in trouble, but I assure him that his labour pains will soon be over by the time we win the elections. “We take these two elections very seriously because we believe in the power of the ballot, we believe that the issues should be contested in a peaceful environment and not by the power of gunshots which has been the tradition of the opposition and we know that people want a change.

“Let me use this opportunity to assure the opposition that we are ready for campaigns, it is not a fight, it is not a war. The only thing we will insist on is that the votes must count because Bayelsans are not used to votes being counted.

They have to be encouraged to understand that the votes will not only be cast in a free and fair atmosphere, but it also must not be through the power of the barrel of the gun. The PDP must know that and learn new tactics in winning votes and not fight wars,” Oshiomhole charged.

Kano State Governor, Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, who spoke on behalf of Chairman of the APC Governorship Campaign Council for Bayelsa state, Gov Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa, said it was time the APC took over the governance of Bayelsa. “This assignment is a historic one because this is the time to take over the governance of Bayelsa State.

We will use our political dexterity to ensure that every vote counts because this time around, it is a matter of democracy, not aristocracy,” he said. Also speaking, Chairman of the APC Kogi state Governorship Campaign Council and Kaduna state Governor, Nasir el-Rufai said his committee would work towards the final burial of the PDP.

“After the flag-off, I will like to urge all members of the Campaign Council to relocate to Lokoja and remain there in preparation for the final burial and nailing of the coffin of the PDP”, he charged.
