Three policemen have been remanded in prison custody for allegedly stealing two AK 47 rifles worth N1.7m belonging to the Nigeria Police Force.

They were earlier dismissed after facing orderly room trial.

The policemen are Uzor Emmanuel aged 34, Akharamen Michael aged 31 and Jimoh Halilu aged 27.

They were attached to “Operation Wabaizigan”

It was gathered that the two fully-loaded AK-47 rifles assigned to Micheal and Jimoh were allegedly stolen from Uzor at Obodo Guest House, Uwasota Road, Ugbowo, Benin City on July 17, 2019..

Sergeant Uzor had gone to the guest house with a lady friend after he closed from duty but discovered the rifles were stolen at about 2am.

The policemen were arraigned on three count charges of conspiracy and stealing.

Prosecution Counsel, SP. Peter Ugbumba, said the trio did steal two AK 47 rifles with Breach No’s, 11479 with twenty-five rounds of live ammunition and Breach No, 05766 with nine rounds of live ammunition valued one million seventy-seven thousands Naira (1, 770, 000.00), property of the Nigeria Police Force, Edo State Police Command.

Ugbumba said the defendants, with intent to felonious and heinous crimes to wit armed robbery, kidnapping, murder etc, did intentionally, knowingly and unlawfully kept in their possession and control the two AK 47 rifles with the live ammunition.

He said offences were punishable under Section 390 (6) (9) of the Criminal Code Act Cap c38 Vol. 4, and Section 3 (1) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap R11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, respectively.

The immediate past lawmaker representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, Senator Magnus Abe, has disagreed with the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, over the alleged move to conduct the congresses of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Punch has reported.

Abe said in a statement on Monday that the announcement by Amaechi that the congresses would be conducted in Rivers was unacceptable.

Amaechi was said to have announced to his supporters shortly after his inauguration in Abuja by President Muhammadu Buhari that there would be congress in the state.

Abe spoke at the weekend when members of the APC Visionary Media Team paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

He said in the statement signed by his spokesperson, Mr. Parry Benson, that rather than concentrate on achieving the needed contribution to national development, Amaechi was creating another avenue for tension and crisis in the political structure of the party.

Abe pointed out that the minister was demonstrating the same unruly behaviour that brought the party in Rivers State to a fiasco.

The senator urged the minister to demonstrate his sincerity in rebuilding the party by consulting others and showing respect for the rights and feelings of all members of the party.

Abe, however, appealed to members to be resolute and committed to the growth of the party in the state.

He assured the group that even if he was out of office, he was still a politician committed to the development of the party, insisting that what is needed is peace, inclusiveness, progress and the commitment of all members to move the party forward.

“Look at the state of our party here today in Rivers State, yet the Minister of Transportation, on assumption of office as Minister of Transportation; the first thing he did was to announce congresses in Rivers State and I ask myself, this was the same kind of behaviour that led the party to where it is.

“Everybody in Nigeria knows that the origin of the crisis in Rivers APC was from the congress and how the congress was handled and there are extant judicial pronouncements on the last congress, which the party was misled to ignore and we have all kept quiet in the hope that by keeping quiet, we will create room for resolution of some of these challenges, so that the party can move forward.

”Instead, you become more brazen in your challenge to the rights, feelings, and interest of others within the same political party. How do we do that and expect to make progress?

”What kind of congress? Is he the chairman of the party? Is he the National Working Committee? Is he the court? What gives him the power to come and announce congress on the day he was inaugurated as a minister?

”Rather than address the issues of the country and the issues of his ministry, the first thing he could do was to reopen the sourest point in the heart of members of the party. And it is on that basis that party members are deprived of all rights and benefits in the party we all suffered to build. Is that how to grow a political family? Is that how to grow politics? We will not accept that congress.

”Minister cannot sit in his office and make pronouncement on a matter in which he and several other people have interest; people have gone to court, people have fought for their rights in that congress and the same thing that he did before, by creating confusion in the first place, he is determined to continue to do it because he wants to prove to the world that he is a conqueror. As I said before, nobody can conquer Rivers people.”

Paul Ibe, a Senior Adviser to the presidential candidate to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has called for the suspension of Festus Keyamo as Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs.

Ibe said this in a reaction to trending photos where the newly appointed Minister posed with a suspected fraudster, Ikogho.

The FBI released full details and identities of 80 suspected fraudsters, with many being Nigerians, arrested in the United States on Thursday.

Iro, 31, and Chukwudi Christogunus Igbokwe, 38, were named as lead suspects.

The duo allegedly coordinated with others, to launder the funds from victims.

Jerry Elo Ikogho was among the 77 Nigerians arrested last week for online fraud. He is number three on the 77-man list.

Keyamo had in reaction to the viral picture said himself and Ikogho grew up as friends and he wouldn’t deny alliance with him, adding that the picture was taken in 2011.

But in reaction on Monday, Ibe tweeted, “Festus Keyamo (SAN), Niger Delta Minister of State and former EFCC Prosecutor is linked to Jerry Elo Ikogho also known as J Man, Number 3 on the FBI Fraud List of 77.

“As was the case with Babachir and Obono-Obla, Keyamo should be suspended for unfettered investigations.”

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Monday claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari was yet to arrive Japan, 24 hours after departing Nigeria.

IPOB stated this while rubbishing the pictures making the round of Buhari in Japan.

Buhari had departed Nigeria yesterday for Japan to participate in the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) holding in the City of Yokohama, August 28-30, 2019.

However, IPOB claimed that the Presidency was deceiving Nigerians with those pictures because Buhari was not in Japan.

IPOB stated this in a statement titled: “The Grand Deception has Begun: Jubril-Buhari Still Missing in Japan over 24 Hours after Departure from Nigeria” and signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful.

Wondering why there was no video coverage of Buhari’s arrival, the separatist group insisted that the photographs of the President in Japan were photoshopped.

The statement reads:

“As with previous photoshopped visit of the impostor Jubril Al-Sudani on behalf of the dead Muhammadu Buhari, the much-publicized presidential visit to Japan has kicked off with another round of deceit, well-crafted lies and photoshop.

“We must recall the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, issued a statement a few days ago regarding this visit. In that statement he said and I quote, “President Buhari will be accompanied by governors Babagana Zulum, AbdulRaham AbdulRazaq and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Borno, Kwara and Lagos States respectively; ministers and other top government officials.”

The Kaduna state executive council says it has approved payment of the new national minimum wage and consequential adjustments to civil servants with effect from September 1, 2019.

This was made known by Muyiwa Adekeye, media aide of Nasir el-Rufai, governor of the state, noting that the decision was taken at an executive council meeting chaired by Hadiza Balarabe, deputy governor.

“The Executive Council stated its that commitment to the public service includes a desire to improve the standard of living of workers in the state. Pursuant to that, the Kaduna State Government launched a pay review process early in 2018. A cabinet committee was charged with exploring how the Kaduna State Government can sustainably improve public sector salaries,” Adekeye said in a statement.

“Guided by the twin principles of ability to pay and sustainability, the government considered several scenarios, bearing in mind the trend of internally generated revenues and allocations from the federation account. Several salary scenarios were considered, and one option was identified as most prudent. A final decision was suspended as negotiations for a new national minimum wage appeared to gather momentum. It was reactivated after the Federal Government announced the new national minimum wage in April 2019.

“Paying the new national minimum wage and consequential adjustments will increase the wage bill of the Kaduna State Government by 33%. Gross monthly salary outlay will rise to N3.759bn from the current N2.827bn.

“This almost N1bn monthly increase in the wage bill means that salary and pension commitments will take the lion’s share of state government expenditure. Meeting these salary obligations while achieving development objectives for citizens will further raise the pressure to expand and deepen revenue sources and collections.

“According to the new wage structure, the lowest-paid workers in the civil service enjoyed increments of as much as 67%. Middle-ranking officers from Grade 10 to 14 were awarded increments of 60%.”

The federal government had approved N30,000 minimum wage after a series of discussions with stakeholders, including the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

In an Instagram post he shared, DJ Muse revealed that the incident which occurred around Ikeja.

The DJ expressed that the event left him speechless as he wondered why his failure to have a certain app on his phone could lead to the brutality he suffered.

He wrote:

A policeman stopped me yesterday around 6:30pm at Ikeja, I patiently stopped and he asked for my ID card which i showed him, he then asked for what i do for a living I told him I’m a Dj, i showed him evidence to prove I’m a Dj.

Now to the matter why i was punched, He told me to unlock my phone and show him my hangout app if i don’t want him to harm me, i was like Sir, i don’t have this application on my phone.

He looked at me and smiled, he said “young man respect yourself and open the application now” I unlocked my phone and gave it to him to search for it if he think im lieing, before a twinkle of an eye i received a HEAVY PUNCH on my face which affected my right eye.

He searched my phone for like 10mins leaving me in a critical condition, I was speechless and couldn’t do anything coz he was with a GUN and i don’t want wahala. After going through my gallery, apps, text messages and couldn’t find anything, he then walked up to me and said take your phone and leave here right now. Ordinary sorry was too heavy for him to say, i left without uttering anything .. So we can’t move freely anymore in this Country??

The Oyo State Police Command, on Monday, said it has arrested a self-acclaimed pastor who lures his female victims to his hideout and rapes them after dispossessing them of their belongings.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspect was one of the 29 paraded by the command on Monday in Ibadan.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Shina Olukolu, told newsmen information about the suspect got to the office of the State Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) in Oyo on Aug. 15.

Olukolu said that the suspect specialised in luring unsuspecting female victims to his hideout at Awe town where he allegedly rapes them.

According to him, the suspect will then dispose the female victims of their belongings as well as engage in ” spiritual cleansing” for ritual purposes.
He added that some items including a cell phone was recovered from him.

“One Infinix cell phone with which he took obscene pictures of his victims was recovered from him.

” He claimed to be the pastor of one Gospel Ministry Commission based in Bashi Quarters in Awe upon interrogation.

“His confessions led to the arrest of one of his accomplices, an alleged quack medical practitioner who performed abortion on one of his victims,” Olukolu said.

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has stated that he’s not scared of traveling abroad due to threats that Nigerian politicians have been marked for attacks when they travel out of the country.

Recall that the former deputy senate president, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, was attacked by some IPOB members in Germany few weeks ago. This has heightened cautiousness among politicians concerning their safety abroad.

In an interview with Legit.ng, Amaechi revealed that self-defense is enough to keep himself protected when he goes abroad.

”What do you mean by that? Scared of who? I’m going to Geneva, let them come. You know there is something called self-defense? Abegi!

”I will go to America or a place I have a function to attend to. The solution is not in attacking the politicians”.

Speaking on the solution to Nigeria’s problem which he believes should be followed instead of attacking politicians, Amaechi stated that the Nigerian economy has to be changed from consumption to production economy.

The Ondo State Police Command on Tuesday said it had arrested one of its men, who allegedly beat and injured a female student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

Some students of the institution were said to have had an encounter with some policemen attached to the ‘A’ Division Police Station, Akure, Ondo State capital, on Sunday night leading to one of them being injured by a policeman.

The identities of the victim and that of the policeman had not been revealed as of the time of filing this report. Video of the encounter had already gone viral on social media.

In the viral video, a young woman ( FUTA student) was seen with one of her eyes bleeding and she kept saying, “Look at my eyes.”

When contacted on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer Mr Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident and said the erring police officer had been arrested and would face trial.

Joseph, who declined to reveal the identity of the cop, however, explained that the matter involved two students, who were on a motorcycle and were drunk on Sunday night.

He said that the students refused to be checked by the policemen, who were on patrol.

He said, “The students were stopped by the policemen on patrol on Sunday night, and when they were asked to open the bag they held, they refused, that was what caused an argument between them, leading to one of them to slightly push the lady. But because the lady was drunk, she fell down and got injured.

“In spite of that, as I am speaking with you now, the policeman in question has been arrested and will face trial today ( Tuesday). He would definitely be punished. ”

The President of the FUTA Student Union Government, Abraham Esedere, said he was at the police headquarters over the matter and promised to call back.

“I’m at the police headquarters, I will call you back after I leave here,” he told our correspondent on the telephone.

Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) on Monday said the recent raid on some Nigerians by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over a multi-million dollars internet scam will have a negative impact on Nigerians, especially those traveling overseas for one reason or the other.

Speaking in a chat with Daily Independent, Sagay who is currently in the US said the development will also negatively affect the image of Nigeria in the international community.

“It is very worrisome and I am very disturbed because not only will it affect our international image but also the prospect of interaction and travelling of Nigerians internationally, especially the manner in which you are regarded when you are in the midst of foreigners. So, it is a very disturbing issue”.

On what the Nigerian government can do, Sagay said while the Federal Government cannot do anything on the matter since it happened in the US and the FBI is already working on it, the government can assist the United States government in extraditing some of the suspects if they failed to willingly submit themselves to the authorities.

“There is nothing the Federal Government can do. The FBI is already taking action on the matter. The only thing the Nigerian government can do is if there are some of the accused people here in Nigeria, the American government will request extradition of such people”.

“So, in that case, the Nigerian government can act. If the accused persons are unwilling to travel to the US themselves, then the FG can commence extradition proceedings”.

“That is the best the Nigerian government can do because the offence was committed in the US and the US is the primary prosecutor of the matter,” he said.

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Minna on Tuesday ordered that a student, Suleman Ayuba, 19, who pleaded guilty to attempted suicide by taking rat poison, be remanded in prison, pending sentencing.

Magistrate Hauwa Yusuf, who gave the order after Ayuba pleaded guilty, fixed Sept. 16 for sentencing.

Ayuba, who resides in Ungwan Daji, Minna, was charged with attempted suicide, contrary to the provisions of Section 231 of the Penal Code Law of Niger State.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, ASP Daniel Ikwoche, told the court that one Badamosi Abdullahi reported the matter on Aug 23.

Ikwoche said the complainant, a noodles seller, alleged that on the same day at about 7 p.m., the defendant bought some and poured a pack of poison in it and ate it.

He said that the defendant became unconscious afterward and was taken to the hospital where he was revived.

When the charges were read to him, Ayuba pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

”I wanted to take my life because life is too hard for me as an orphan,” he told the court.

The Federal High Court, Abuja, will, on Wednesday, hear the motion filed by Mr Omoyele Sowore, Convener, #RevolutionNow protests, challenging his detention for 45 days by the Department of State Security (DSS).

Sowore, who is presently in detention had on Aug 9, approached the court, seeking an order to vacate the ex parte order that gave the DSS the legal backing to detain him for 45 days.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo had, in a ruling on Aug. 8 in an ex parte application, ordered Sowore’s detention for the said period to enable the DSS carry out and conclude its investigation on allegations levied against him.

The DSS had also, on Aug. 20, challenged the court order, allowing it to detain Sowore for 45 days against its request of 90 days pending investigation.

Sowore, who is the publisher of SaharaReporters and Presidential Candidate, African Action Congress (AAC) in Feb. 2019 general elections, was arrested in the early hours of Aug. 4 by the operatives of the DSS in a hotel in Lagos.

He was moved to Abuja on Aug. 4.

The state agency said Sowore was arrested on account of the #RevolutionNow protest which he had spearheaded.

However, in a motion on notice, brought pursuant to sections 6 (6) (B), 35 and 36(4) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, section 293 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 and under the jurisdiction of the court, Sowore asked the court to vacate the order on the grounds that the order was made in violation of his full rights.

The motion filed on Aug. 9 by the human rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, SAN, was predicated on 18 grounds and supported by a 24 paragraphs affidavit deposed to by one Marshall Abubakar.

Mr Falana had, on Aug. 22, stormed Court 10 to seek for a date for the hearing of the application. He expressed displeasure over the court’s delay in hearing the motion.

It is now confirmed that the matter had been scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday for hearing.
