‘If Sowore Is Charged, Buhari Will Be My First Witness In Court’– Falana Says

$

Femi Falana, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), says the government will be making a mistake if it files charges against Omoyele Sowore.

Sowore, who is the convener of #RevolutionNow movement, has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since Saturday.

The DSS had accused him of threatening public peace and safety with his planned nationwide protest.

But speaking at an event organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) on Tuesday, the senior lawyer who though did not mention President Muhammadu Buhari’s name directly, said Sowore had briefed him from detention that in the case he would be charged, his first witness would be someone in government who in 2011 also called for a revolution.

Then a presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Buhari had called for a revolution in Nigeria – although through an electoral process.

Sowore, according to Falana, refused to write a statement, insisting the DSS allow him to speak with his lawyer.

“I do hope that the government will not be stupid to charge Sowore. In fairness to them (DSS), they gave him a telephone to phone me. Of course I knew they were monitoring the phone, and I told him I hope they won’t charge you, because if they do, some of the people in government will be our witnesses,” he said.

“You know why? One of them, I won’t mention his name. In 2011, he asked Nigerians to learn from the Egyptian revolution and be ready for a revolution in Nigeria. So, he will be my first witness.

“The late Chief Gani Fawehinmi and four other people were charged with treasonable felony by the Ibrahim Babangida junta. I was one of them. We were detained in Kuje prison for two months.

We were taken to the court, and what was the offence? I think we went beyond Sowore. We posted thousands of posters across the country, that Babangida must go. That was the treasonable felony.”

Falana, who stood in defence alongside Fawehinmi, said they argued that the then military president did not come to office through constitutional means.

He added that those in government now harassing Nigerians with treason would someday, too, be tried for treason.

It is not clear if Sowore will be charged as Peter Afunanya, DSS spokesperson is yet to respond to messages seeking development on the matter.

According to a resident, Mohammed Muktar, said the situation in Monguno is now calm, but there was restriction of movement in some part of the town.

There have been several attempts by Boko Haram to take over Monguno since the beginning of this year. But last night attack was deadly. We do not know the number of soldiers or Boko Haram that were killed, however, stray bullets killed five civilians and injured many others. It was too bad. Most of us are just returning from hiding,” he said.

A source within the security operative in Monguno told Daily Post that, the attackers came through Kuya village to attack soldiers’ location at Charlie1 near the stadium.

“We fought them throughout the night and managed to repel them. I am not in the position to speak on casualty, but as I always said, this is not a game and casualties are bound to come at the end of a battle as this. We are counting on your prayers as we put our lives on the lines. If we lose comrades in a fight, we move on knowing that, we do not die in vain but so that innocent people can have peace, ” our source said.

Local hunters and members of the civilian joint task force in Monguno, who spoke with pressmen said the attack was the most deadly in recent times.

Abdulkadir Musa, a member of the local vigilante said:

” I cannot give you the details because the security forces are still in pursuit of the Boko Haram fighters and corpses are still being gathered. We have found five among the civilians, but the soldiers have evacuated their own and that of the Boko Haram fighters they killed.”

Attempt to get Col. Ado Isa, the Spokesman of 7 Division, Nigerian Army to speak on the attack in Monguno did not yield result as he could not pick calls or reply to the text message sent to him as at the time of this report.

12 Corpses, 11 Injured Protesters Still In Police Net – Shiite Members Claim

According to The Nation, the members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) on Wednesday raised an alarm that 12 corpses and 11 of their injured protesters are still in the police custody.

The group also said that 63 of their members arrested during the recent series of protests are still in the police custody without taking them to court according to the law.

Following the release of their leader Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, to go abroad for medical treatment, IMN said:

“The time has come for those who mischievously claimed earlier that until the court decided the fate of Sheikh Zakzaky, they couldn’t do anything in spite of his deteriorating health and the incessant call for his release. Now that the court has acceded to the demand for treatment abroad, not only that we await prompt compliance but we also want to see expedition in the process of the trip.”

The group demanded for release of all the corpses and their members being detained, both the injured and the healthy, by the Police.

A statement issued by a top member of the IMN, Abdullahi Musa said:

We wish to inform the public about the continuous incarceration of the victims of Monday, 22nd July, 2019 police brutality. The victims had been severely injured before their being whisked away, and they are still languishing in police cruel custody. Again, police are yet to release twelve (12) corpses to their bereaved families for funeral prayers according to Islamic injunction, nine (9) of which were killed forthwith at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja and three (3) died under their detention. The families of those that were killed have made several attempts to collect the corpses, but the Police rejected their request. Now, over two weeks in the wake of the incident, the corpses are yet with the Police.

“Likewise, the Police continue to detain 63 protesters without taking them to Court. Out of the 63, 11 people sustained various degrees of serious injuries that required urgent medical attention. Despite their critical condition, the Police have only taken the injured ones to unknown location without given them the required medical attention. Even the families of the injured have made several attempts to provide medical treatment to them, but the Police turned down their request.

“Moreover, some of the injured, who returned to their families, were taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital by their respective families for effective treatment, but police attacked the hospital and took them away violently while receiving treatment, and they are still in their detention without medical treatment.

“It is pertinent to remind the Police that detaining free-zakzaky protesters, including female and minors, for more than two weeks with life-threatening injuries and denying them any medical treatment is a sinister disrespect for the laws of the land and United Nation Human Rights Body of Principles for the Protection of All Persons under Any Form of Detention or Imprisonment.

“It is quite inhuman for the Nigeria Police to arrest hospitalized patients and detain them without treatment. Obviously, the rights of the protesters have been violated and the lives of those that are still alive under police detention are in extreme danger.

“We therefore demand for immediate release of all the corpses and our brothers and sisters being detained, both the injured and the healthy, by the Police.”

DSS Arrests Journalist For Supporting Omoyele Sowore On Facebook

Barely 24 hours after releasing him, the Department of State Services on Wednesday arrested a former Politics Editor with Daily Trust, Ibrahim Dan-Halilu, in Kaduna State, according to a report by Punch.

Dan-Halilu was arrested on Sunday for supporting the ‘Revolution Now’ movement led by Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore.

A source close to the journalist said, “Dan-Halilu was arrested on Sunday and then released on Tuesday after being given a stern warning. However, on Wednesday morning, the DSS guys came again, saying they had been given orders from Abuja to detain him again.”

The Spokesman for the DSS, Peter Afunnaya, told our correspondent on the telephone, that he was not aware of the arrest but promised to find out and give a response later.

Dan-Halilu had in a post on Facebook lamented the spate of killings, the high rate of poverty; the decision of Buhari to appoint persons with questionable character as ministers and the inability of the government to satisfactorily account for the manner in which the recovered $320 Abacha loot was spent amongst others.

The post read in part: “I feel I should share because it resonates with me. If it resonates with you too, please share until all oppressed people of Nigeria get the message and domesticate it. This is #Not the Nigeria of My Dream.

“Somebody asked me why we need a revolution now, this was my reply: The aim of the revolution is to challenge the uncommon hardship why we have 16m children on the street; challenge why we have become the poverty capital of the world; challenge why we have 20 persons with corrupt cases as federal legislators and would-be ministers.

“We need to restructure the country. We need to put an end to trillions spent on electricity while we live in darkness and pay estimated bill for electricity and meters. Why do we have huge oil reserves but our refineries are dead and we are re-importing what we exported as crude oil? It is time to ask why those in government travel abroad for medical care when they have left our hospitals dilapidated; why they send their children to school abroad when our children learn under mango trees.

“We are revolting against the continuing killings that have left 20,000 Nigerians dead while those in office move around under state-paid security and do nothing.

We are revolting against the because over a thousand Nigerians soldiers killed by Boko Haram have been secretly buried without identifiable graves, dignity or honour. $16m was purportedly spent on mosquito nets but our children die daily from malaria. $320m Abacha loot was purportedly distributed to the poor. Where is the verifiable list? N500bn was purportedly distributed to the poor as so-called Trader-moni. Where is the verifiable list?”

Crystal Palace winger, Wilfried Zaha, has handed in a transfer request at the club, as he seeks to force through a big-money move before deadline day, Sky Sports reports.
