An Ejigbo magistrate court has sentenced one Morufu Wasiu to six months imprisonment for stealing yoghurt and other items in one Mr. Joseph Ejikeme’s house at 18, Church street, Ijegun, Lagos.

The prosecutor, Supol Kenneth Asibor (ASP) said the suspect and others who are still at large, jumped into the compound of Ejikeme at about 04:15pm on May 23, 2019, and stole Holladian yoghurt, pack of Pepsi, pack of Eva water, pack of Happy Hour juice, pack of Eva milk and other assorted juice of various makers all valued at N85,800.

According to Asibor, the suspect and his accomplice packed all the items inside a truck and took them away to an area called Dustbin, where the Hausas usually sell scraps at Pipeline, Ijegun.

He said:

“immediately the Hausas saw them at that odd hours pushing the truck with goods inside, they knew it was stolen goods and they started taking the goods one after the other and started drinking, though it was a fasting period.

“This alerted the members of OPC in the area to what was going on and they arrested Morufu While others ran away at the sight of the OPC.

“The case was handed over to the police and the suspect was charged to court on a two count charge for burglary and stealing.

“It was discovered that the suspect has been in the habit of stealing through his confessional statements, and that he came all the way from Ogun state in Totowu area with others at large.”

The suspect, having pleaded guilty to the 2 count charges, was sentenced to a 6-month imprisonment by Magistrate T. O. Shomade, with option of N20,000 fine.

Residents of Olunlade Area in Ilorin on Thursday complained about the havoc wrecked by flood on their property as buildings, cars and shops were destroyed after a heavy rainfall.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the area experienced a heavy downpour around 4pm on Wednesday which lasted for about three hours.

Some of the victims, who spoke separately with NAN, expressed sadness over the terrible occurrence and damage done to their property.

One of the victims, Mr Femi Olaoye, whose house was taken over by flood, said he was helpless as the water entered his siting room and kitchen.

“I was bitter and sad as there is nothing I could do to stop the flood from entering my house. It was only me and my two children at home. I wept bitterly to witness such terrible occurrence.

“All my electronics were damaged beyond repair. Even the bedroom has turned to swimming pool. I am confused,”

He said.

Another resident, Mr Yusuf Taiwo said the flood came as a nightmare to him as his furniture, bookshelf and electronics were destroyed by the flood.

“Even some vital documents that I placed on the floor in my room have been destroyed by the flood.

“I don’t know what to do because am confused at the moment. I never expect the extent of the damage done by the flood. It was a shock,” he said.

A shop owner in the area, Mrs Ronke Idowu also said that almost all the provisions in her shop were damaged.

“It is a total loss for me as there is nothing left for sale. All the cartons of biscuit, noodles, sweet and soaps were damaged by the flood.

“Some were on the bare floor in my shop that made it easy for them to be destroyed beyond retrieval,”

She said.

Mr Timilehin Olubiyo said he had to abandon the building with his family since the incident occurred because he could not continue to live in the house.

He said,

“I immediately move my family to a friend’s house. Even I cannot take ordinary clothes along as all my clothes were damaged.

“It is very unfortunate. I am not happy at all. We want government’s intervention on time.”

Kayode Jimoh, a taxi driver, said his car was a major concern as the car was also submerged in the flood.

He said “I don’t know what to do. I parked it in front of my house and because of the downpour, before I realized it, it was water filled. I can’t move it now because it’s not starting when I try to start it.

“My concern now is how to make a living since I rely on the car for my livelihood. It is only God that can help me so that I won’t be put to shame”.

The World Bank has applauded the Governor Yahaya Bello administration for introducing sustainable Agriculture programme.

The World Bank team gave the commendation on Wednesday during their inspection tour to the site of Kogi Agricultural initiative fish ponds at Geregu village in Ajaokuta local government area.

They noted that the programme will boost Kogi economy, reduce unemployment and poverty among the youth population.

In his address, Kogi State Commissioner for Agriculture, Oloruntoba Kehinde said the state government in collaboration with Central Bank of Nigeria’s Accelerated Agricultural Development Scheme (ADS) constructed 500 fish ponds as a pilot scheme and have been handed over to over 1000 youth across the state to own and operate.

Oloruntoba said:

”Kogi Agricultural initiative fish ponds which has been shared to our teaming youths and women as empowerment policy of the Governor Yahaya Bello’s Agricultural revolution policy of the NEW DIRECTION AGENDA.”

“As one of the testing site, this laudable program will spread across the nooks and crannies of Kogi State as hundreds of thousands of our youths and women are expected to benefit from the World Bank/Kogi State Government sponsored fish pond from starting to harvest.”

He added that each beneficiary will harvest over 1,500 fish in a pond.

A 22-year-old man, Maikasuwa Joshua, on Thursday was arraigned in an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for allegedly stealing N128,300 belonging to Mr Dehinsilu Olusola.

Joshua, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

NAN reports that the Prosecutor, Sgt. Adegeshin Famuyiwa, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 16, at Balogun Estate Parafa in Ikorodu.

Famuyiwa said the defendant stole the money belonging to the complainant, Olusola.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Section 187 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mr E.O. Ogunkanmi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N60,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until July 25, for mention.

A Magistrate Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti on Thursday remanded a 23-year-old man, Yusuf Mohammed, in prison, over alleged murder of his supposed wife, Safiat Yakubu.

The accused, whose address was not provided, however, pleaded not guilty.

Refusing Yusuf’s plea, the Magistrate, Mrs Kehinde Awosika, ordered that he should be remanded in prison, pending advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Awosika adjourned the case until July 30 for mention.

The Prosecutor, Insp Monica Ikebuilo, earlier told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 16 in Omuo-Ekiti.

Ikebuilo alleged that the accused laid ambush for the girl and cut off her head.

“Yusuf had married Safiat and paid her dowry to her parent, but she refused to live with him,” she said.

She told the court that the deceased once moved into his house but later packed out, saying the accused suspected her of having extra-marital affairs with another man.

According to the prosecutor, the offence is punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

The prosecutor said the case file was duplicated and forwarded to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice, NAN reports.

A 42-year-old technician, Mr Bello Abudu, on Thursday, told an Igando Customary Court in Lagos that his wife pushed him into adultery.

Abudu, whose wife, Blessing, sought the dissolution of their marriage, accusing him of infidelity, told the court while responding to the allegation that his wife pushed him into adultery, NAN reports.

“My wife always tells me that I cannot impregnate another woman and that if I try to make love with another woman, my male organ will get stuck inside that woman, that she had done something concerning my male organ.

“I was afraid initially, but later I decided to try it to know if she is saying the truth.

“But luckily, the girl I met got pregnant and had a baby, when my wife got to know, she told me that the baby was not mine.

“After some months, I decided to do it again to prove her wrong, and the girl took in again.

“Since then, Blessing made the house unbearable for me by fighting me regularly. She caused the Police to arrest me and when I could no longer bear it, I packed out of the house,’’

Abudu told the court.

The respondent said that his wife starves him of sex on many occasions, adding that she mostly claims that sex gives her a headache.

He urged the court not to grant his wife’s wish by dissolving their marriage but told the court that he still loves her.

Mrs Blessing Abudu had approached the court to dissolve her 12-year-old marriage over her husband’s alleged infidelity.

“My husband is cheating on me, he got a girl pregnant on two occasions.

“I have gone to several hospitals and herbal homes, just to have another baby but my husband is busy making babies with another girl,’’

She lamented.

The 36-year-old tailor accused her husband of denying her the pleasure of having sex with him.

“My husband refused to sleep with me, despite the fact that I desire another baby.

“He told me to look for another man to sleep with me and vowed that he will not sleep with me again,’’ she alleged.

Blessing accused her husband of posing serious threats to her life.

“Bello told me that I am eating poison in his house, that I should pack out, else he will kill me or cause me to run mad,’’

She told the court.

The petitioner said that her husband had abandoned her with the only child of their marriage.

The mother of one begged the court to terminate the marriage, adding that she had long lost interest in it.

The president of the court, Mr Adeniyi Koledoye, urged the two parties to maintain peace and adjourned the case until July 25, for judgment.

Outrage on Wednesday trailed the abduction of 28 passengers on the Akure-Ado-Ekiti road on Tuesday about 6 a.m within the Iju/Itaogbolu axis in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Daily Independent learnt from an anonymous source that the assailants took advantage of the bad portion of the road to commit the crime.

Sources also claimed that the passengers were travelling to Onitsha in Anambra State from Ado-Ekiti, capital of Ekiti State, when they were abducted.

However, Festus Omoniyi, Secretary, Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Oyemekun branch, Akure/Ado unit, said only 10 persons were kidnapped.

He identified the driver of the vehicle as Felix Akinde, saying they were kidnapped at a spot known as NYSC junction.

Speaking to Daily Independent on the abduction of the 28 passengers, pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, said nothing could come out of the security summit by the governors because they attempted to downplay the security challenges in the South West.

Yinka Odumakin, the organisation’s National Publicity Secretary, also advised Yoruba people to look for traditional means of protecting themselves, adding that relying on the Federal Government for adequate protection may prove costly.

Odumakin said: “The governors had a summit in Ibadan yesterday (Tuesday) where they attempted to play down what confronts South-West today. One of the governors that spoke for almost 32 minutes didn’t mention anything on insecurity in Yorubaland.

“And these are the governors that were saying Zamfara is the worst hit and that insecurity is a general problem. Twenty-four hours after the summit, we are seeing this happening.

“When they rose from their meeting, they issued their communiqué.

“There is nothing special about the communiqué and nothing can come out of it. The essence of the summit was not to address the problem but to just pretend that something is being done.

“But clearly, at this point now, the Yoruba people should know now that their fate lies with them.

“Like Afenifere said a week ago, the Yoruba should activate their traditional self-defence system now because, like Theophilus Danjuma said to this country a few weeks back, the people depending on official protection to defend them in this situation now, they will all die one by one.”

Juventus manager, Maurizio Sarri, has revealed that he smokes 60 sticks of cigarette in one day.

Sarri, a 60-year-old former banker, is not only well known for his playing style (Sarri ball) as of his smoking habits off and on the pitch.

He averages around four packets of cigarettes a day and he has admitted it’s getting out of control.

“I smoke 60 a day, which is probably a few too many,” he revealed to La Nuova Riviera via Football Italia.

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested 53 persons suspected to be cultists, during a raid of criminal hideouts in the State.

The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, SP Haruna Mohammed disclosed this on Thursday in a press release made available to newsmen in Awka, the Anambra state capital.

He said the development was in the command’s determination to sustain the ongoing manhunt for secret cult members, which he said had become a major social problem in the state.

Mohammed said the operation was carried out by police operatives attached to the command’s ‘Operation Puff Adder’ in conjunction with Special Anti Cult Unit.

He added,

“At Abba/Abagana axis, 15 suspected cultists were arrested; at Ukwulu, six suspected cultists were arrested; at Oko/Amaokpola/Awgbu axis eight suspected cultists were arrested.”

He said 24 of the suspects were arrested at Nteje, Ogidi, Amawbia, Urum and Ihiala areas of the State on different dates.

He listed exhibits recovered from the suspects to include four Axes , three cutlasses, some quantities of dry leaves suspected to be cannabis sativa and a substance suspected to be cocaine.

The PPRO said from the arrests, 15 were screened out, nine were charged to court while 29 were undergoing investigation.

He added,

“In a related development, police detectives attached to Ogidi Division in conjunction with Puff Adder operatives, following intelligence report had stormed the hideout of a notorious armed robbery suspect, one Emeka at Ikenga Ogidi and recovered a double barrel Pistol.

“Suspect on sighting the Police escaped through the back door and effort is ongoing to get him arrested in order to bring him to Justice.”

Banku Music Boss, Mr Eazi releases his highly anticipated single titled “Supernova“, produced by Ghanaian record producer, EKelly.

This follows Mr Eazi’s nomination at the just concluded BET Awards for the ‘Best International Act’. Furthermore, he also recently performed at this years’ Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Additionally, Mr Eazi’s previously released project “Life Is Eazi, Vol. 2 – Lagos to London” has been pulling massive streams on Apple Music.
